She's undoubtedly the queen of pop music but I find it weird that when I think of Madonna there isn't one song that immediately comes to mind as being her most sucessfull. Unlike Britney (Baby One More Time), Kylie (Can't Get You Out of my Head) and Gaga (Poker Face)
Right,
Officially it's 'Hung Up', with about 9.5 million. Those who count about 10 countries out of all the world mist remember that Madonna sells absolutely worldwide (her recent album, MDNA is the only album ever to have topped all the world charts, 51, beating her own previous world record of 38 which she stole from the Beatles).
It stayed on top of the world chart for 14 weeks, and was followed by her own 'Sorry' for anothe 7 weeks, which means that she stayed on top of the world chart for half a year, that year.
I think second is 'vogue' which sold 6 million and '4 Minutes'.
All these songs are in the list of best-selling singles of all time.
I totally agree. I remember watching a Top 100 countdown about a decade ago and was really surprised when I saw that she's never had a million selling single in the UK.
Just had a look at Wikipedia and 'Hung Up' is her bigogest seller worldwide with sales of 9 million.
I remember that programme and when it revealed that Madonna wasn't even on the list you could've knocked me down with a feather I was that shocked. I just could not believe it!
million selling songs were particularly rare in the age of vinyl and cassette, and the expensive cd single - which could only be purchased from a shop. Especially by female artists. Power of love was the first million seller in the UK by a female. Todays digital sales are not comparable, much higher generally for all artists - as they are readily available at a click. Some analysts have a formula for working out comparable sales just like they do for current box office stats to old box office sales. I think that I read that singles on late cassettes and early cd were up to 3.45 times lower than current digital single sales. That is extraordinary?
Like A Prayer, Like A Virgin, Vogue, Hung Up. When someone says 'Madonna' these are the songs that immediately come to mind.
I don't think an artist needs to have one single song that comes to mind in order to make them as an artist, although some do. (eg. Ke$ha, Tik Tok)
In terms of someone like Lady Gaga I'd dispute that Poker Face is her one big hit single, UK-wise Bad Romance and Telephone were sizeable smashes and Bad Romance is probably at least as well-known as Poker Face.
here are the worldwide sales figures for `vogue`. New Zeland: 5.000
I am shocked that Vogue didn't even reach Gold sales status (7,500) in NZ.
Anyways, to me, when I think of Madonna's biggest single, Hung Up immediately comes to my mind. Possibly because it is her recent mega-hit that people can think of in an instant. There is also Like a Virgin, Holiday, Lucky Star, Ray of Light, Music, Sorry and 4 Minutes. At my gym, they play Girl Gone Wild from MDNA quite a lot.
I think it depends on era, for people around now they probably would most likely associate her with Hung Up. For me in the 90s it was Vogue but my mum associates Madonna with Like A Virgin being her biggest tune.
Judging by what i'm reading here Hung Up is her biggest selling single but when it comes to her best known I would definitely say that it's Like A Virgin, it's the most sang Madonna song on karaoke and I think most people would name that song when Madonna is mentioned.

Absolutely, it may not be her biggest selling but whenever you mention Madonna to people who aren't necessarily fans they always seem to start singing Like A Virgin:p That song plus her coned bra outfit are what the general public seem to associate with her the most
These are the ones that I would say are 'ingrained' in popular culture, ie that pretty much most people know/recognise, are used/referred to regularly for clips/ads/media purposes, etc. I may be right on some of them, I may be wrong, who can really say! If you start to think about it too much you want to include more, but then it would risk just becoming a pointless list of Madonna songs
Holiday
Like A Virgin
Material Girl
Into The Groove
Papa Don't Preach
Like A Prayer
Vogue
Frozen
Ray Of Light
Music
Hung Up
The thing with Madonna is that her career has spanned so long, so really people of all ages have their own "Madonna song". And that can range from teenagers in the 80's bopping out to Holiday or teenagers in 2004 listening to "Hung up". It's not so much about her defining song being the peak of her career, but how it impacts people at the time of release.

I've sang LAV many a time on karaoke and ALWAYS people sing along clapping theirs hands in time with the music.
And before the end of that night there will be a group of half cut girls getting up to sing it.
When it comes to Madonna LAV is her signature song.
Like a prayer surely? It's the one most people will think of when they think of madonna.
It's also the only madonna song I like!
It's her best song definitely but I still think the public by and large think 'Like A Virgin' when they hear Madonna although polls suggest Like A Prayer is her most liked song and crowd reactions when she does it on tour suggest the same
