And while we're at it, what is the obsession with a request show? They have one, Fridays 5-7, and in the main, it's bloody awful!

I think I know what you mean! Annie Nightingale's Request Show was a soundtrack to Sunday nights in the 1980's, but would it work now? You can't trust the public's choice! I'm a bit of a neo-Reithian at heart!

I would offer David Jacobs' show to someone who's really passionate about music from the Cole Porter era and leave it alone! For goodness sake it's only a hour a week!

I think Radio 2 should intersperse some pre-rock and roll standards alongside Stereophonics, Mel C, Bowie, Pink et al into it's weekday daytime shows to give it more of a public service broadcaster feel!

Yes I agree xla. I wonder if Leo Green (Benny's son) would be interested in a Sunday night spot? I thought he did a good job with the tribute to his dad the other night ("Green on Green"). It's well worth a listen.

I wouldn't be surprised Janice is moved from Midnight back to 11am soon? Top 40 could come over from Radio 1 eventually as One is changing as well. Scott Mills and Sara Cox will eventually make the switch over to Radio 2.

Nonsense. The top 40 is in it's natural home as most singles are bought by the younger people.

Whilst a very good programme I do find Russell Davies rather smug in his presentation.

    l!

Yes me too - Annie's show worked because it tended to lean towards the non mainstream, and wasn't 'say hello to me nan and Aunty Pam etc etc etc'

Something like that *may* work on 6 but if you were to do one on R2 you may aswell stick it on at Sunday lunchtime and get someone like Gloria Hunniford to do it

Here is a reply I have just received from Radio 2:

    Many thanks for your email.
We have recently confirmed that Russell’s Sunday show won’t continue in the autumn, but he is going to continue to have an important role on Radio 2 and we are developing those plans right now and will announce the details shortly.

The only reason I mentioned a Sunday Night Request Show with Annie is that she seems to have been tested on Radio 2's audiences in the last year or so with her Bank Holiday specials. This is normally a sign for a regular Radio 2 show (a la Chris Evans, Liza Tarbuck, Anneka Rice, Tony Balckburn, etc....)

However her Eternal Jukebox isn't a "say hi to Auntie Pam" type of show and I think it could work nicely but maybe it'd be better suited to Saturday evening rather than Sunday and shift either Tarbuck or Gambo to Sundays instead.

I've noticed over the last ten years the traditonal Light Programme shows have been pared back, probably would delight a well known hater of these called Scott Nelson who used to appear on here, but annoying to the fans. In the last ten years All Time Greats, Your Hundred Best Tunes, Melodies for You and The David Jacobs Collection have gone. It does seem now this type of music is confined to later on Sundays and Friday nights.

Perhaps Scott Nelson always was Bob Shennan?

Maybe they didn't have money to make a jingle for him.

Ho ho, but it is true that traditional programming on Radio 2 has been slashed in a way Scott Nelson would like. Ten years ago it was traditional programming from 11 to 12 on Sundays, now it's reduced to 5 hours. ( I count Parkinson as being of the Light persuasion as most of the music was pre rock and roll and non pop if more modern).
I know things have changed, but it was strange that a respected classical show like Your Hundred Best Tunes was outlived by Melodies for You, which was a hotchpotch of a show.

Someone pointed out elsewhere that it was rather bizarre to be paying tribute to Benny Green whilst announcing the dropping of Russell who continued Benny's style of expert and erudite musical broadcasting.

I think Nelson managed to single handedly get the old R2 boards closed down - I remember his very first post. I hope he's moved on in his life and realised there's more to life than Radio

Agree FM Lover, Annie on a Saturday would be better, as long as it was something different, the Friday drive show used to seek out things you'd not heard in a while, these days it's 'we're stuck on the M5, can you play ABBA'

Brian Matthew must be the father of the house now DJ is going? He has a nice soothing voice that would be good for a Sunday night

Somehow I doubt that, I suspect he is not far away from another attempted comeback on here. He is the Al Queda of DS posters.

Scott could be amusing, but his hatred of people like Alan Keith went too far once and he was kicked off a forum. TBH, for all he said he loved the station, he only wanted it to play pop music. Radio 2 is more than that.

Unfortunately threads on the Radio 2 board which were started in appreciation of one of the older presenters and their music immediately became toxic. Unpleasant memories.

This article is in today's Sunday Telegraph. How shortsighted Radio 2 is being :(.

I will be honest, as a teenager in the eighties, a Radio 2 Sunday of Melodies For You, Sing Something Simple and Alan Dell was something you didn't want to listen to. Yet all these traditional shows had several million listeners and for all a show like Sing Something Simple was in terminal decline when it was cancelled, there's still an audience of about 1-2 million for pre rock and roll and non pop light music.

Interesting: 2 x 13 week stints on a weeknight suggests he might rotate with Jools Holland, whose show works on the same cycle. Pure speculation on my part of course.

Tsk, Glenn, you should have been finishing off your homework or cleaning your school shoes instead of expecting to listen to the radio ;).

I find You Tube has killed my desire take part in request shows on the radio or to listen to them. If I really want to hear a specific track I just search for the video on You Tube and watch (assuming it is not already in my CD collection).

Instead when I listen to tunes on the radio it is because I want to broaden my personal musical portfolio and hear other tracks (old or new) which I haven't heard before or have forgotten about.

As for Sunday evenings R2- I would like to see 9pm to Midnight remaining specialist programming and hopefully the 11pm slot will remain similar in nature to the David Jacobs Collection.

    Here's my two-pennorth -

I've really enjoyed Richard Madeley on Sunday lunchtimes over the last few months and think that they should hire him for this slot permanently.

I would then put Wogan on Saturday mornings from 8am til 10am and have a proper breakfast show, much like his old weekday one.

Move Sounds of the 60s to Sundays from 1pm til 3pm and then move EP into a new 9pm til 11pm slot on Sunday evening and round things off with Clare Teal's current show from 11pm til Midnight.

You would then have a dedicated 'Decades' sweep in the afternoon from 1pm til 5pm and then a 'Musical Theatre' sweep in the evening from 7pm til 11pm with Ball and Paige.

The amount of times I handed in homework late was unbelievable:)
