Russell Davies show dropped

I was dismayed to read this in the Telegraph today. What is Bob Shennan doing to the loyal and mature listeners like me who rely on the Sunday night programmes on Radio 2 for "our kind of music"? It's bad enough that we are losing wonderful David Jacobs but that can't be helped because of his poor health.

I have learned a great deal from Russell over the years as he has such a wide breadth of musical knowledge and presents it in a calm, informative and erudite manner.

I await developments with great unease.

Sounds to me like he is using David's departure to have a bit of a shake up on Sunday nights.

But I wonder why he would do that or would think it necessary? The Davies/Teal/Jacobs trio makes fantastic listening for those of us who feel that we are slowly being edged out of anything on Radio 2 to which we can relate.

Why doesn't Bob Shennan realise that the older generation are living longer and are entitled to have their musical needs satisfied by Radio 2? Plenty of us as well as many younger listeners of my acquaintance are interested in popular music which pre-dates the rock'n'roll era.

Cue the posts demanding a Radio 2xtra, and why not?

Would certainly get more listeners than 1xtra and 4xtra.

The older audience should be catered for by BBC local radio, Radio 2 should appeal to all over 35, which includes over 55s, but the over 55s will get more specialised programming for their age range on BBC local radio.

Radio 2 on Sunday nights should have programming which appeals to a much wider range of its audience than it currently does.

Whilst on the topic of Radio 2's output why on earth are they simulcasting a classical music concert with Radio 3. There is a whole BBC network for classical so why does Radio 2 feel the need to encroach on Radio 3's turf they struggle with listeners as it is without Radio 2 trying to steal more.

In fact there are only 4 national music stations on FM, two are classical music stations so why is a 3rd also covering this genre? What next a classical music show on Radio 1 so all 4 networks cover this type of music?

I guess because it's called the 'Radio 2 Prom'. If you like Friday Night is Music Night, you should like this

I enjoy the Sunday evening output, its a break from the norm

I fear we're losing some of Radio 2's best (evening) shows.

I've never understood the argument that Davies/Teal/Jacobs would only appeal to an older age group. Surely people can enjoy more than just music recorded during their lifetime? What's not to like about the classic songs from the American songbook, great singers, wonderful orchestras. I've been listening to David Jacobs since about 1978, and I was only in my teens then..

Surprised by this. I can understand David Jacobs at 87 and being in poor health wanting to call it a day but I feel his departure will now be the catalyst for a sweeping change on Sunday's. Losing Melodies For You, the move of the Sunday Half Hour, I guess we should have seen it coming.

Will Clare Teal now move to 9pm with general specialist programming in the 10pm - 12am slot as we get on weekdays?

I agree Andy - as I said earlier on today:

I learned about jazz, big band music, Gershwin, Porter, Berlin, Mercer et al from the Light Programme in my teens and followed them ever after, with a concurrent liking for the pop hits of the day in the 1950s/1960s.

Do you think they may move Desmond Carrington to Sunday Nights

That'd be a good idea, of course he used to be on Sundays before being shifted to weekdays.

Personally I think Michael Ball's show would fit the 10pm to midnight slot on Sundays.

I would champion Annie Nightingale moving to 7pm Sundays with her eternal jukebox, Desmond at 9pm and Michael at 10pm.

What about Clare Teal? She isn't going as well, is she??

I remember when we were told that Sunday evenings would stay the same. Then Malcolm Laycock, Melodies for You and Sunday Half Hour went. Now the rest of it, Jacobs and Davies is going as well.

Others better watch out. I guess it's slightly to do with the station branding image. Shennan is trying to bring in younger broadcasters for the shake up. If listeners didn't think this would happen then they are blinkered. Sundays seem to get it as the blue rinse brigade tend to sit there.

Just out of interest has this been confirmed by either the BBC or Russell Davis himself, or are we just going off what appeared in a newspaper?

I have only seen it in the Telegraph - Gillian Reynolds is a respected journalist.

Yes I have every faith in Gillian Reynolds but I DO hope that she is wrong.

I'm not sure the "blue rinse brigade" as you put it exists any more Occy, I haven't seen a blue rinse in years.

Sunday night 9pm-midnight is for people of many different ages who like and are interested in jazz, big bands, the history of popular music, musical theatre, the quirky bits of background knowledge which no-one else tells us about etc etc.

It's not just for the elderly, as you seem to suggest.

Indeed she is and she is likely to be right on this. Gillian's been close to BBC Radio for a long time - I dealt with her at Radios 1 and 2 forty years ago. It's very sad to see David Jacobs go, he's made a success of everything he's done over the many decades at the BBC. As far as Russell D is concerned, Radio 2 really should not drop this programme as it virtually stands alone in the type of show that was once presented by people like Benny Green.

I wouldn't be surprised Janice is moved from Midnight back to 11am soon? Top 40 could come over from Radio 1 eventually as One is changing as well. Scott Mills and Sara Cox will eventually make the switch over to Radio 2.

All we need now is for Bob to give Sunday Love Songs and EP the chop and... whoops, did I say that last thought out loud?! :D

Actually you did, but I'd stick EP's show on Sunday nights anyway and give both JW & POG an extra hour

That show will never be dropped as it's very popular.

Anneka Rice will probably be moved to specialist show then bring someone else into Saturday Morning like Sara Cox?

    Why would this ever happen?

As someone who is in the Radio 2 demographic and enjoyed it in the Moir era, I find a lot of it utter drivel these days. I tend to stick with 6 Music, but what I do like about R2 are the specialist shows, documentaries and yes the Sunday evening output. To stick another "Dave Cheese" (which certain people on this God forsaken forum seem to adore) on a Sunday evening talking about what his favourite potato is and "wasn't the 80's fab" would signal the death knell for the station, as it may as well go commercial

And while we're at it, what is the obsession with a request show? They have one, Fridays 5-7, and in the main, it's bloody awful!
