No one. Poppy is inoffensive but she doesn't really add anything interesting to the show. The last thing I'd do is give her more screentime in the sitcom era we're currently in. They need to bring in grittier characters to give the series some bite. And I don't mean stage school gang members.

I agree to an extent. Personally it's all about getting the balance right! We need a good mix of goodies and baddies, something which we don't have at the moment!
I don't think casting Poppy's mum is such a good idea, perhaps for a short stint but definitely not full-time!
Always been a dream casting for me, but I'd love her in as the head of a new family. She deserves to be a matriarch to her own family.
And as for the show needing "grittier characters", don't agree. I would like to see some gritty things happen to a positive character such as Poppy. It adds much more scope for exploring as opposed to the hardened shouting women we regularly get. Rachel Bright is a fantastic young actress, let down by the material.

I was going to suggest Alison Newman, and then saw that she'd already turned up in a few episodes as a policewoman in 2008!
Is Deena Payne the actress who played Viv Hope on Emmerdale??
If she is then she would be the perfect person to play Poppy's mum!!
I would cast Gwyneth Strong ( Cassandra in Only Fools )

Alison Newman would be good as a regular actress on the show, Frances Barber wouldn't join a soap on a regular bases I think...
Literally just came in here to say that. I've thought for a while she'd be perfect.
I hope we do see her at some point.

I always thought Alison Newman would be good to play Shirley's sister Tina.
Mrs Brown
I always saw Linda as Mo's daughter Jean. They are quite similar in looks.
