The Apple Store guys would have a cow if you only ran Windows on your Mac and you took it to the Genius Bar to be fixed
I know a few guys in software/tech support who do just that with a few clients... (of everyone I personally know who has a Mac Pro, I'd say it's close to 50/50 who run Windows solely on them... admittedly, some of those got them at very good rates when compared to the Dell or Boxx etc. equivalent Xeon machines...)
I don't understand why people buy Macs to run Windows. It seems daft to me. The Apple Store guys would have a cow if you only ran Windows on your Mac and you took it to the Genius Bar to be fixed
Linus Torvalds uses a macbook air to solely run Linux. No other laptop has the form factor or screen resolution that he desires.
It's ok people bleating on about these cheap laptops, but if you want something with power you're not paying a great deal less than a macbook pro.
Go and price a dell latitude or xps up. Lenovo thinkpads aren't that cheap either once you factor in a high end processor, maxed out ram and half decent graphics. Sure you can get a desktop but some of us want portability.
i bought a high spec (desktop replacement) Acer laptop, and it was quite frankly a heap of shit - poor build quality, prone to overheating and after not too long i just sold it.
spent the same amount of money that the Acer cost and got a Macbook Pro. worlds apart in terms of build quality, performance and durabilty. 4 years on that macbook pro was still able to run the latest OS and was causing no issues at all. i suspect that Acer would have fallen to bit long before those 4 years had been reached.

I don't think Acer are all that good. My dad had an Acer laptop and after 2 years the graphics card went and it was unrepairable. He bought a Samsung laptop as he wanted to stick with PCs.

Linux is alright I guess but only running Windows on a Mac is not a good idea. You'd better hope the men in black turtlenecks don't turn up at your house

you're right, heap of shit.
but when you spend £1600 on a laptop, you expect it to be half decent.

Did the Acer laptop really cost that much? After my dad's experience I wouldn't recommend Acer to anyone again. Meanwhile my 2010 Macbook Pro, which was bought on August 25 2010, is still working well and I got the RAM upgraded to 8GB a few weeks ago
Have a look at the Apple Referb storeHERE, I've bought 2 MBP and an iMac and there in New condition with the same warranty, you have to keep looking for the model you want mind as they sell out like hot cakes

yes it was a really high spec desktop replacement laptop.
this was a good few years ago though.

It should definitely have lasted longer then. I'd expect a short lifespan with a cheap laptop but not with a more expensive one. The one my dad had was expensive enough too.

Another bloke I work with got the Acer "desktop replacement" machine but this was way back, must've been 2004/05 I think. It was really well built and ran like a dream, think he paid £1500 at the time.
I have a cheap Acer laptop, it's ugly, thick and heavy. But I paid £360 for it 5 years ago (and was a steal at the time). Runs pretty much any software you want it to, can run the latest version of the Windows operating system and works just great. It was also really easy to upgrade the RAM, HDD and WiFi card to keep it up-to-date without having to buy a whole new laptop.
You can't say the same with Apple computers - they might be physically sturdy but Apple apply an arbitrary obsolescence to them. E.g. the thread recently on DS where the chap couldn't run the latest version of iTunes without having to buy newer versions of the OS. The latest version of iTunes runs on Windows XP which is an 11 year old operating system. Or how people with laptops 4 years or older can't run recent versions of OS X etc. Also while Apple lets you usually upgrade the RAM ok, it's very difficult to replace other components. On the new RMBPs, you can't upgrade anything post-purchase - all the components are glued down!

Got my Macbook Pro back in October 2010 - running great! Still feel likes it's new - I'm only on 4GB but I'm seriously thinking of upgrading....
Did you notice a difference after upgrading? How did you upgrade - through Apple, or bought from an independent retailer and done it yourself?
I'm debating on either doing that or selling this one and getting the 15" MBP .. not sure yet.

It might be a good idea. I got a local Apple reseller to do the upgrade as I didn't want to fry the machine. They did a good job. It seems to run faster. I see less of the spinning beach ball.

i got my 13" Macbook Pro in June 2010 and chucked a 60GB SSD in it, which is fine as i also bought myself a iMac.
But im still running my MBP with 4GB but it now flys with the SSD in it!
It takes 6seconds to boot! and takes 3 seconds to load Photoshop!

OOOoo SSD sounds quite good actually - I'd thought about it before but never really looked into it ..
cnbcwatcher - less of the spinning beach ball is definitely a plus!
I'm probably going to be getting an iMac next year when I move in with my fiancé so I suppose I don't really need to upgrade to the 15" laptop anyway .. think the SSD or the 8GB Ram will do
if it's got OSX Lion pre-installed then it's not a current model.
looks like the guy is selling off old models, or it's a refurb.
Did you see the 1-star review?:
"What arrived was a 2011 model, higher spec but I wanted the latest heat distribution technology (I hear they get very hot) What arrived had 750gb hard drive 2.4ghz i7 processor with intel hd 3000 graphics. The problem was the box had been opened and as it was an old model I couldn't be sure it hadn't been used a lot."

It certainly is. Ironically I see more of the beachball on my Air than I do on my Pro. Time for me to start using the Pro again I think...

Ive got an old acer 5 year old laptop. I only use it a couple of times a month to VPN on my work from home days. apart from that it really is a pile of junk and pretty hideous to use. It certainly needs an OS restore but who has the time. It runs the vpn stuff ok so thats all that really matters to me
For personal use I use my 2011 mac book pro which has a build quality on a different planet compared to the acer, doesn't come with all the uber annoying bloat ware typical of windows. All the built in apps are really good such as iPhoto, iMovie etc. The track-pad on the acer is a joke compared to the mac book. it doesnt need to be rebooted very often, but since I put an ssd in thats not a big deal as it only takes a few seconds to do a hard re-boot and the OS doesnt need to be re-installed every 6 months like windows

So maybe it's more common than I thought?

Swings and roundabouts, I suppose.

Save you self almost £200 and get it from this Amazon seller..
I ordered mine last Wednesday it was here Monday...
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008BEYN1O/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00

page seems to make it look like a brand new one, but doesn't look like it to me.

very vauge on the descriptions there.
MBP are usually described by their release dates, i.e late 2011 or mid 2012
As chenks says if its got Lion installed it's unlikely to be the current mid 2012 model.
No its OSX Mountain lion..
the Amazon link you provided show's Lion
Also the Amazon sellers address is in Hong Kong, I'd prefer to shop else where.
clearly a dodgy seller selling grey imports and refurbs, but "as new".
avoid.
I think I should start thinking about putting an SSD into mine
