Yeah that hurt, he played one of my favourite characters ever in one of my favourites films ever (Point Break) so what if I didn't know him personally

I loved him in Ghost and Dirty Dancing.

I don't give celebrity deaths a second thought. I didn't even know some of those mentioned were dead tbh. When a sheltered housing warden, we used to hold quizzes and I often thought about having an 'alive or dead?' theme. :D But I thought better of it - not knowing how the older tenants would take it

He really was very good in Ghost. The final scene makes me cry like a baby every time I watch it! I sometimes watch it on youtube just to torture myself lol :D

    Steve Irwin,

I used to think I was rather cynical and a bit of a stone heart about people who got upset over celeb deaths, and the Princess Di grief was way OTT, but I genuinely felt quite sad when I heard about him.

Yep I was genuinely gutted when he died, which surprised me a bit as I wouldn't have considered myself a real fan, although I quite liked his shows. It was just the random, pointless nature of it I think, and he did seem like a genuinely good bloke.

I wouldn't put it quite like that but it is unfortunate if young people with a full career ahead of them pass on early due to drug overdoses, etc.

Really upset me? No. That's reserved for my loved ones. Sadness at the loss of a young celeb's life.

The one that upset me most was the artist Mark Speight. I used to watch him with the kids on BBC's Smart and the kids thought he was fab. To see his downward spiral into depression after his girlfriend died, then the hunt when he went missing only to be found hanged some days later was upsetting. I have depression myself and just really felt for him.

Michael Jackson, because despite all the scandals about him I grew up listening to his music and hero worshiped the guy as a kid.

I also felt very sad by, if not upset, the deaths of people like:

    Shirley Temple
    Esther Williams
    Mickey Rooney
    Joan Fontaine
    Peter O'Toole
    Amy Winehouse
    Whitney Houston
    Harold Ramis
    Peaches Geldof

to name a few. I feel particularly sad whenever anyone from the Golden age of Hollywood dies as we don't really have anyone from that great era left now.

Someone I forgot - Jill Dando, because of how violent and random her end was and the disgusting behavior of the police in the aftermath.

Saddened, shocked and a bit upset by a good few but, as someone said, genuine upset comes from losing people I loved or knew as friends. I can also feel upset, obviously, about cruel, premature, violent and senseless deaths even if I don't know the person. For example and a bit OT, admittedly, but am currently very sad and upset about the teacher who was recently stabbed because I live locally, went through the Catholic high school system and had heard of her a few times, despite going to a different high school and never having met her. Across 40 years, she was a bit of a legend. Obviously not going to say much more because the case is now going through the courts but many local people had links with her. It is true she was very popular and well loved (the usual platitudes really mean something in her case) and feelings are running high.

What was disgusting about arresting a suspect ?

I was sad when 'The King' died but not upset.

It's not that they arrested him that's the problem and you have to ask, I'm not going to even waste my time in getting into it with you.

I don't think your being OTT at all, dory, since you have something of a real connection to the teacher.

I have no connection whatsoever and find her murder shocking, vile, and really upsetting. It's just a genuine tragedy that should not have happened and didn't need to happen. I feel for anyone who is remotely linked to her in real life. :(

Well, I meant OT as in 'off topic', Goblin, because I was straying from the theme of 'celebrity'. I agree; I don't think it's an OTT (over-the-top) reaction- or 'grief porn', as some cynics might accuse- at all to be thoroughly sickened and upset by Mrs Maguire's death, irrespective of a 'local' connection. :):(

My wife was genuinely upset when Lux Interior died, and it was definitely a loss when John Peel, Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash all died.

I remember other people being shocked when Marc Bolan and Elvis died, but I was a bit young to be shocked about those myself. John Lennon dying was very shocking and it was all anyone talked about for days.

Violent, sudden deaths, or deaths of younger people, are always going to be shocking. River Phoenix dying freaked me out - I was a fan and in my innocence I believed all the nonsense he used to spout in interviews about how clean living he was. Kurt Cobain's death was horrible - I was at uni and the news came over the radio and everyone gasped.

I felt sad when River Phoenix, John Candy, Diana and John Thaw died. It's not the same as personally knowing someone who's died, though. People who have gone through that know the difference.

My apologies for misunderstanding, but I agree completely with what you say here. There is a world of difference between genuine reactions and grief porn and if I knew someone who was murdered in the way Mrs Maguire was - even if I just knew them passing or had only met them a few times or something - I'd be quite affected by it all.
