Why are American houses made out of wood?

I'm watching Wife Swap on mute and their house is made of wood. So, going from a generalisation, why are a lot of American houses made of wood?

He huffed and puffed. I don't think he was stupid enough to risk an arson charge.
Although he was stupid enough to jump down the chimney into a pot of boiling water.

Better than brick?
In his defence the chimney was probably quite dirty and he couldn't see down. In any case, I doubt a pot of boiling water would be instant death. Realistically he probably suffered severe burns and would have died later after a number of attempted skin grafts.

Bricks are made of out clay that is hardened and shaped in a kiln or in the sun.

I'm sure that the wolf was still capable of some kind of chase once the endorphins kicked in.
