No googling or calculators, just whatever you come up with in your head

:D

Hubby bought a box of 24 bottles of budweiser in tescos today. I said how much was that? he said £10.00

I wondered what each bottle cost and came up with my answer which was wrong!

The calculation is easy enough. 10 / 24. But without a calculator off the top of my head all I can say is less than 50p. Maybe closer to 40p a bottle.

Another way I look at it is if he paid £24 it'd be £1 a bottle but since he paid less than half that it must be less than half of £1 :)

    it doesn't work exactly

    40p is 9.60. so its 41p and a bit,

    about 2 seconds.

    1000 / 2 = 500 [2 = 2]
    500 / 2 = 250 [2 x 2 = 4]
    250 / 2 = 125 [2 x 2 x 2 = 8]
    125 / 3 = 41 (2/3)p [2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 24]

Does maths sound as wrong to the American ear as math does to a British one?

    so 1000/24 = 40p with 40 left

    40/24 = 1p with 16 left

    16/24 = 2/3 = .67p to two decimal places

    41.67p

    less than 10 seconds

I don't think it sounds wrong when said with an American accent but does when said in a British accent or in a British forum.

    1000 / 24 =
    125 / 3 =
    40 + 5/3 =
    a little under 42.

Yes. Even though I know better it still sounds like a mistake or a joke. People sometimes inappropriately pluralize something to feign ignorance, and that's what it sounds like.

I divided 12 into £5 which made it easier.

Eight shillings and fourpence. No decimal points required.

Yeah, me too. Although of course it is really mathematics I remember a thread from a couple of years ago where someone asked if you needed to be good at mathematics to be a programmer. I said no and it was principally because this kind of thing (which is common in programming) is not what I like to call mathematics.

The shocking thing that came out of that thread was that a lot of people really do struggle with arithmetic. Not just the actual calculation but working out what calculation is required. In other words if you gave them a basic calculator it wouldn't help :o

Which is, no doubt, why so many people find nothing strange about a price label that reads "£3 each, 4 for £12, 3 for £10".

    Can't resist.
A hen and a half lay a egg and a half in a day and a half. How many eggs do six hens lay in seven days?

I can't even get my head around that first part. Too many halfs in it for me. Though to be fair I didn't wake up up that long ago. Maybe I'll come back to it.:D
