How do you feel about this event? The surrounding area has gone through a redevelopment with ultra-wealthy people moving in and supposedly improving the surrounding enviroment. There are more specialised shops in the area that cater for their needs.Do they need this event on their doorsteps when they have spent millions on their properties?

I'd like to go one day. Looks like fun.

Don't give two hoots about the wealthy residence nearby. If it's such a nuisance for them to put up with a carnival once a year, then they shouldn't have moved to the area in the first place.

Just an excuse for gangs of feral youths to go 'steaming', carry out all manner of acts of violence and generally cause chaos.

That's like folk who move into a house by a church and then complain about the bells.

The carnival has been going on for years and lots of people enjoy it. Like it or not, it's become established. It's short-lived and if posh rich folk don't like it, they should have chosen somewhere else to live.

I like it. I usually go but I never made it this year. Notting Hill has some very lovely houses, and they're probably iconic of the area (like many things in Landan innit)

I think everyone knows Notting Hill has a festival, so moving there and being pissed of with it is selfish and stupid.

It's over a bank holiday weekend, anyway. It's not as if it's mid-week.

Yes, I'm sure this is the exact reason the council and authorities allow the festival to go ahead  Although I know there's trouble, it's usually after the majority of the festival goers have gone.

I went once, about 10 years ago. Never again. Lots of wondering hands, disgusting. I wouldn't care if it was scrapped or not.

I like it. I used to go as part of the procession when my ex played in one of the bands. Thats my best experiences of it. Loved doing that more than being part of the crowd as I found there are tooo many people and you can't move around easily. The food is great too.

I haven't been for years, but I always had fun when I did go. Sunday afternoon's less hectic, and that's when I'd usually be there.

NHC has on the whole been very good natured. Why should the amount people spend on the properties be a bar to it taking place? The carnival was there first!!!!!

Never been myself, but it's very colourful and looks a lot of fun. Hope nobody gets hurt this year.

It should be banned or at the very least scaled back to one day and relocated to a park. I couldn't believe it when I heard on the radio that there were only two stabbings and no shootings yesterday. Some family event, that.

It's awful. I heard stories of people having acid thrown in their faces yesterday. Nasty.

And only 108 arrests, too. But I don't know how that compares with other public events. I've never been, probably never will, I'm not keen on big crowds anywhere.

I can't think of any event I'd want to attend less. I think it should be stopped due to all the crime associated with the event, not because of house values in Notting Hill.

A chance for Babylon to lend his hat to dancing revellers :D

Nope, too crowded and somewhat unsavoury for my tastes. I think it needs to be moved because it has outgrown the area :(

It's been nothing by trouble for decades.

Any other civilised country would have banned it years ago.

"Latest from New Scotland Yard - 13:00hrs, Monday 30 August 2010

The total number of arrests at Notting Hill Carnival 2010 is now 104.

    Break down as below:

    15 - Possession of Class A drugs
    9 - Possession of Cannabis
3 - Possession with intent to supply class A drugs
2 - Possession with intent to supply class B drugs
13 - Drugs offences (no further details at this stage)
    5 - Drink drive
    1 - Disqualified Driver
    18 - Public order
    5 - Assault
    4 - Wanted on warrant
2 - Possession of an offensive weapon
6 - Possession of a pointed or bladed article
    9 - Drunk and disorderly
    1 - Fraud act offence
    2 - Theft
    5 - ABH
    1 - Immigration
    1 - GBH
    2 - Handling stolen goods

The first full day of Notting Hill Carnival saw a peaceful, fun day with arrests down overall on last year and no major incidents.

Chief Inspector Jo Edwards said there had been a great atmosphere and more than 400,000 people had turned out on the streets of London to enjoy Europe's biggest carnival.

'The policing operation has gone smoothly and to plan. People seem to have heeded warnings to come to carnival to have fun, but not to cause trouble.

'We hope carnival-goers will come today with the same approach and we can all enjoy this great cultural spectacle without it being marred by serious incidents.'

Director of London Notting Hill Carnival, Ancil Barclay, said: 'It was a great opening day to carnival weekend, showpiecing some of the best talent and bringing communities together to an event that was enjoyed by all Londoners, and visitors from home and abroad.'

There were no firearms incidents on Sunday. There were two stabbings, which resulted in minor injuries."

So...104 arrests out of over 400, 000 attending, two stabbings which were not fatal, and the majority of the offences were quite petty and non-violent.

And interesting to note no reports of anyone getting acid thrown in their face...

It's the perception of the event in most peoples eyes that mars it, unsubstantiated stories of swarms of black people steaming through crowds, stealing wallets, purses, stabbing people etc.

Or from those people who attended once and had something minor happen to them, or thought it was too crowded, or felt unsafe, even though nothing actually happened to them.

I went to a music festival in Victoria Park in London last month (High Voltage), a festival comprised of older, traditional rock and progressive/metal bands...an almost exclusively white crowd, and hardly anyone there under 50...and I was pickpocketed.

    Yep...perception is everything...

What a reactionary and prejudiced thread in parts! As for the wealthy residents- the Notting Hill Carnival started long before the Kitty's and Giles' moved in .
I wouldn't go because I can't do crowds but don't think it should be banned at all. We don't advocate mainly white events being banned if assaults/drugs/rapes happen yet focus on a mainly black event...I wonder why:rolleyes:

This thread reminds me of people who attack Gay pride and think it shouldn't happen.

I went once and didn't enjoy it. There were too many people for me to want to go back again. We could hardly move in places and it was all very intense. My friend did have her purse nicked (which, of course, could happen anywhere). That doesn't mean I want it banned or disapprove of it.

It's been OK this year, I think. I was dreading it as I live here and am a bit NIMBY about it - usually try to get away for the weekend, as do a lot of Notting Hill residents.

It's very disruptive and it's a pain having to cart about bills as proof that you live in one of the roads that gets blocked off.

The police can be a bit aggressive and unpleasant, but I suppose it's not much fun having to face hundreds of thousands of drunk people!

I would actually support it being moved into Hyde Park or somewhere similar. Absolutely, it would change Carnival, but I really do think it has outgrown our small neighbourhood. And I'm so tired of watching people piss in my garden, and throw their food and drink cartons there as though it's just a big rubbish bin. [angry]
