Once illegal immigrants are in the country we have no hope of finding, detain and deporting them unless we cover employment, housing and the NHS. The policy is not to punish landlords but to make life as difficult for illegal immigrants as possible so their only option is to leave.

I agree and landlords do have responsibilities apart from collecting rent.

It is the responsibility of the government to make sure that there are no (or at least very few) illegal immigrants in the country, they shouldn't be passing the buck to landlords.

They aren't passing the buck, any landlord who is renting to an illegal immigrant is aiding and abetting a law breaker and that is an offence.

Can I ask who you think is more likely to encounter illegal immigrants, the border force or employers/landlords/NHS staff?

I suspect most illegal immigrants wouldn't go anywhere near anyone official. You might as well say it is not the publics job to report an accident or a robbery as it is the police's job. There is such a think as civic duty.

They are responsible for the security of the nation, but in this case the Home Office knows the people are ending their legal stay but their ONLY action is to threaten the owber of the property where the people are living.

If the landlord does evict the people the HO stop knowing where the people are as they become part of the illegal economy.

Telling the landlord that someone they rent to wil become an illegal immigrant is passing the buck.

You don't have to tell me that: I reported some Afghans who I used to live downstairs from, they got raided by the UKBA one time at 5am & it frightened the life out of me & my dog (the banging on their door), I don't know if the raid was connected to my intervention - but I did what I could.

My landlord told me that he is not willing to rent to Asians because the smell of their curries ruins his properties.

What does that have to do with illegal immigrants?

A side-product of only renting to Brits/EU citizens is not running the risk of renting to illegal immigrants.

They can be but they're not 100% guaranteed to be, but then you know that - you're just trying to be a smart-arse.

A Birth Certificate should be perfectly adequate to prove a right to stay in this country.

Hope you're being sarcastic as getting a birth cert is as easy as buying a pint of milk !

The thinking behind this is fine but it seems the execution of it may need to be reviewed and revised to ensure landlords or their agent know what it is they are supposed to be doing and what documentation they check.

In the future if a landlord has carried out the checks properly they won't be renting to an illegal immigrant. When they do the checks for those they've rented to prior to their introduction if the tenant is an illegal immigrant then they should be obliged to evict them and inform the police. I suspect the tenant will probably scarper.

Landlords in England will be expected to evict tenants who lose the right to live in the UK under new measures to clamp down on illegal immigration.

Central government has sole authority over immigration matters. So why does this measure apply only in England?

So the landlord could end up in prison meanwhile the illegal immigrant is free roam the UK. Surely it would make more sense to ring the home office so that the illegal immigrants can be escorted back to their country.

Why the patronising condescending tone? FYI there was an Asian man (Sri Lankan I think) running the shop downstairs from me, same landlord, but my landlord unfortunately doesn't apply his 'no Asians' rule to commercial properties; the Asian man cooked smelly food (imagine socks worn for a week without washing, marinated in garlic that has gone mouldy) on a camping stove in the back of the shop - it stank my flat out, particularly my bathroom, it was so bad that I would gag, the smell penetrated things in my bathroom such as towels & my nightdress, it was truly awful, I sprayed air-freshener around but that didn't work, he's gone now thank God, though the fact that there is no rent coming in from the vacant property for my landlord could spell bad news for me if eg my boiler breaks......

The UKBA needs to be made fit for purpose. It wouldn't surprise me if some landlords are themselves illegal immigrants.

Jailing landlords will cost taxpayers money. Why not just confiscate the property, give it to a Housing Association.

So a genuine landlord who rents their flat to a perfectly legal person who then has their asylum claim or permission to stay revoked half way through their tenancy which the Landlord will not know as they will have seen genuine documents at the start of the tenancy should have their property removed ?

A friend of mine rented their property to an Indian couple - nice people but when they left it took weeks of airing the place with windows open and a complete redecoration to get the curry smell to disappear.

Luckily they left in late spring - so airing was possible.
