ITV1+1 Macro regions

The ITV1+1 regions will be:

* London
* Meridian and Anglia
* West Country
* Central
* Yorkshire and Tyne Tees
* Granada and Border

Why have they been organised like that? Border and Tyne Tees are two sub-regions and if they keep them separate then why not put the original Meridian area with London and the South Central area now with Meridian with Central?

    It's all about population.
    If you put Border and Tyne Tees together then you'd also have to put Granada and Yorkshire together - you'd get one channel watched by a few hundred thousand and one watched by several million.

    By splitting the macro regions the way they have, each has a similar population size. Except London, which is bigger than all of them.

    Will we ever see ITV1 HD Wales & ITV1+1 Wales???

    What about
    ITV1 Scotland &
    ITV1 Northern Ireland

    Even if they can't get onto EPG position 103 they should breakaway completely from STV & UTV.

    They could then just have shows that go to all of UK & have slots allocated to regional variations in England also specific programming in Wales, Scotland & NI.

    Does this make sense?

    STV+1 is testing, and there's a feed of UTV with the EPG delayed by an hour, which suggests they intend to launch too.

    Wales is 'lumped in' with the West & West Country

    My view as well, that there should be a separate ITV1+1 Wales & ITV1 Wales HD channels. Shame Ofcom hasn't done anything to request these be created totally separate from the English macro regions.

    The current Channel 3 regional franchises doesn't allow ITV PLC to have their own ITV1 in the STV & UTV areas. But there is nothing to stop them putting programmes on another ITV channel where UTV or STV have opted out.

    Most viewers will. But some will see a different region's local news.

    How stupid are ITV plc? its clear that ITV Wales will not work as a time-shift channel if its lodged in with West & West Country.

    Hmm.. they might as well give us CITV on Freeview 72 instead of ITV1 +1 at this rate.

    Will ITV1HD move to ch131 so the guide is like this

    Ch 131 - ITV1HD
    Ch 178 - ITV1+1
    Ch 179 - ITV2+1
    Ch 180 - ITV3+1
    Ch 181 - ITV4+1

    Just a thought.

    Totally agree. At the moment ITV1HD,from Welsh DTT transmitters,is putting out the London region. Will this change to West&West Country,as well.

    I can see more viewers on DTT,in this part on North Wales,turning to Winter Hill,for the ITV Granada services,if the above happens,as this would be more local.

    This is in theory the same as ITV HD if that ever gets to 6 regions, also when ITV next ask Ofcom to cut their committment to local news it seems to be the most logical split.

    I am a bit surprised that ITV don't give more to Wales. After all, it is the only country outside England whose ITV they own.

    ITV Wales' schedule is roughly the same amount of network content as STV's, so do you mean they should be doing more Welsh language content?

    Why do you say that? Surly, it would make more sense to merge spilt Meridian and merge it between Anglia and London than to put Newcastle and Lincoln in the same region.

    If they want to make a further cutback without merging regions it would be easy to merge the London and Meridian weather forecasts as London is such a small densely populated region.

    Ofcom couldn't request that as the franchise is for the Wales and West region. Wales is the only area where the news region is smaller than the franchise region and that is down to the Welsh Assembly not Ofcom.

    There should be

    ITV1 Wales
    ITV Scotland
    ITV Northern Ireland

    ITV1 London
    ITV1 Meridian and Anglia
    ITV1 West Country
    ITV1 Central
    ITV1 Yorkshire and Tyne Tees
    ITV1 Granada and Border

    All should have HD & +1 variants

    Hope that is all correct, have I missed anything?

    No offence taken if anything I've put is wrong

    Regards,

    Dan.

    Newcastle to Lincoln is not that greater distance in ITV "local" terms. There are longer distances in the current West and Meridian areas.

    I wasn't just objecting to your suggestion of saying Yorkshire and Tyne Tees would be the next logical merge just based on distance. Yorkshire is already a very large region and has a lot of densely populated areas: Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Sheffield, Hull and Lincoln. Don't forget Meridian has a big gap in it's area to leave a unified London region, while the West region has North and South coasts relatively close to one another. Yorkshire doesn't have either of these. I think you could compare Yorkshire with Central but not Meridian or West

    I agree with Meridian quite a bit of the area they "cover" is also covered by London, the Thames Valley, the M3 corridor in Surrey and north Hants, west Kent, north Sussex though they cover that area many people have their ariels pointed to London. How wide east to west is the real Meridian area at the M4 - how far west does London go and have far east does ITV West go. And how far does London eat into the Anglia area.

    With Central by adding back Central South you are not actually increasing the distances they cover, The longest distance will still be Herefordshire to the eastern point of the East Midlands.

    I can even see a point where ITV would go down to 5 micro regions.

    South West and South Wales

    Granada and North Wales.

    Central (with Central South, the western half of Sandy Heath and south / mid Lincolnshire added - even Mid Wales ?)

    London, South and East (inc most of Meridian and much of Anglia)

    Yorkshire / Tyne Tees

    The bottom line of ITV's business is selling adverts, I can see in future if an region is not creating enough advertising revenue it will just be axed and added to the nearest region(s). How much revenue do Meridian, Anglia and TyneTees / Border create compared with London, Central and Granada ?..

    In the case of Anglia and Meridian many of the larger Towns and Citys are on the edge of their regions or are overlap areas and they could quite easierly be put into other regions - ie Peterborough, MK, Northampton, Oxford, Swindon, Reading, etc.

    BBC have one HD channel which shows most of their new shows in HD whether they are BBC1 or BBC2 shows. BBC HD's schedule only corresponds with the BBC1 schedule for programs that will likely be very popular e.g. international sport.

    That is totally incorrect

    BBC One HD is a simulcast of BBC One.

    BBC HD shows mostly a simulcast of BBC Two/Three/Four & occasionally repeats of other shows when these channels are not showing a programme that has not been made in HD.
