When somebody sits in for someone on Specialist Radio shows...

When somebody sits in for a Radio DJ on specialist shows, does the person who sits in choose the music or does the normal presenter/DJ choose the music and sends it over to the presenter/DJ sitting in? I know on Daytime shows this isn't relevant as daytime presenters have no control over the music.

Just wondered after hearing B Traits sitting in for Annie Mac. Wasn't sure if the music B Traits was playing was similar to Annie's.

I always think it's a shame that they can't compile their own individual show instead of continuing with the normal presenters quizes etc. ;-)

Would be a much easier question to answer if you were more specific about which specialist shows you were enquiring about, and whether you meant on national radio or on local radio or even community radio. Sometimes the knowledge that individuals have is irreplaceable ( Brian Matthew is an example - when he was ill none of the replacements managed to come close to making the show as enjoyable as when he presents it) whereas on BBC local stations that still have specialist shows they always seem to make an attempt to provide a viable alternative- usually done badly though! For CR stations I would guess that those that have specialist shows rather rely on one presenter with an interest in the genre.
Cue vehement outrage and examples where stations provide knowledgeable alternatives, and re-open debates about how SOTS has gone downhill recently etc. Still you did ask!

I was talking about B Traits sitting in for Annie Mac really, I did say that as an example. Same genre, but just wondered if B Traits chose the music whilst she was only sitting in.

Brian Matthew has no say in the Sounds of the Sixties playlist or research, source Brian Matthew interview in Record Collector 2009.
