make one - its so easy!!!!

This is pretty much how I would do mine.( and yes, we'll be having one ) a really standard recipe, except I cook it inthe oven on a low heat and after two hours add chopped up steak sausages ( one for each person) and then put it back in the oven for another hour - try not to stir it too much at this stage!

Even more delicious if made the day before ( so no need to worry about getting up before lunchtime and cooking it with a hangover on Ne'erday ;)

And to make it even easier, you can cook the pastry separately and just plate it up together.

ps, - just buy ready made puff pastry - if you can get all butter pastry then thats the best! Jus-roll do a really good frozen one, in a gold packet.

It won't be as good as home made pie and it's not as good as a proper butcher's steak pie but Marks and Spencer do various sizes of 'scottish' steak pies and they are not bad. The pastry is very good and the gravy is well seasoned, just don't expect big chunks of meat as you'd get in a proper pie.

I used to get mine from Lidl, but they switched to a supplier in Wales, who only does the small pies.

The recipe above looks like bog-standard steak pie. What's "Scottish" about it?

Scottish steak pies are large rectangular pies, made of puff pastry (rather than short crust pastry) and use premium cuts of meat. It's difficult to find them South of the border. Here's a couple of Scottish butcher websites to give you an idea:

Again there is nothing there that you can't find in an English pie. And rectangular? Lol

Sounds like a pukka pie! Except they are round, though you used to be able to buy rectangular puff pastry pies from the chippy.

Well, actual meat for a start.

Eh? I have decent meat in my pies. Sounds like your trying to be sarky/insulting.

I presume by this you're insinuating that only SCOTTISH pies could have proper meat and that English ones must be inferior.

    How rude and insulting

I see you've already got the chips to go with your pie.
    On your shoulder, that is.

Exactly, that would be like assuming a scotch pie is battered and deep fried.

Sigh. It doesn't really matter, never mind.

A Scottish Steak Pie is simply a regular, standard steak pie that anyone would make. Made in Scotland, there's a fair old chance it would use Scotch Beef rather than Irish or Agentinian beef. And it would have only onion, and link sausages in it - no other vegetables.

As a Scot who was taught to cook by my mother, but have lived in England most of my life, it amuses me that people think there is something so amazingly different in a Scottish Steak Pie. I suppose you could dose it with a shot of Scotch, or cook the beef in good scottish bitter, but there really isn't anything different about it wherever it's cooked, except for the sausages in it - which is the best bit anyway.

When I was a kid I spent a bit of time in Scotland I remember having pies that were round with a flat top. The pastry was unlike anything i've had since and the filling was amazing. I don't know what was in it but they tasted beautiful. This is what I remember them looking like. http://www.murdochbutchers.co.uk/Single-Serving-Pies/The-World-s-Best-Scotch-Pie-2010.html

I think there is a difference between a Scottish Steak Pie and a Scotch Pie.

AFAIK a Scotch Pie used minced/diced lamb.

As far as I can see, the only thing that differentiates a "Scottish" Steak Pie to any other Steak Pie is the inclusion of beef sausages as well as steak. I'm guessing it became popular as a way of keeping the cost down.

Anyone know where I can get a proper Scottish steak pie in London for Ne'erday?

Years ago I worked in the butchers and its stewed beef with a liberal sprinkling of Jamaica Pepper (mixture of allspice, salt and pepper to your taste) , covered with puff pastry. My OH always makes ours - its so easy ;)
There are a few Scottish butchers in London, I know I used to live in London. Try Google or the Yellow Pages ;)

Qype also has lots of local businesses.

I worked in the butchers a long time ago and sausages were by request, when we made steak pies. Some people like them included others don't.

Nah, Scotch Pie is a mutton based pie, although I guess it's more fashionable/expensive to use lamb meat these days. You can get Scotch Pies in Heron and Farmfoods stores.

I think we do jump on the band wagon a bit quick. I dont believe the OP meant that English pies are inferior.

One thing for certain, the pastry, gravy (not too much) and quality of meat and other ingredients used in the pie makes such a difference. Pies use to be something that never featured on my shopping list - I guess shop bog standard ones didnt help - and then I tried the ones in our deli produced locally - they are amazing!! Yum Yum. Now hooked.

Hope you find what your looking for OP happy Hogmanay.

Thanks everyone for all your replies - I opted for M&S in the end. Was going to try Borough Market but ran out of time!

All the best when it comes! ;) and hope you enjoy your steak pie. My oh is making the stew as we speak, we also have beef sausages and I prepare the seasoning. Today we bought home made puff pastry from a good butchers near us. The pie dish is ready to receive the pie :D
