  Depends what you mean by independent, even the best website or magazine carries advertising and you always have to wonder if it can have undue influence:)
  
  User reviews again can be informative but you once again have to hope that the comments reflect the true opinions of the user who may be wanting to justify the purchase to others:)
  
  For user reviews try the AVForums, lots of dedicated forums used by consumers and some experts.
