My one and only favourite band of the 80s has got to be A-Ha. My one favourite song of theirs from the 80s is I've Been Losing You (still my favourite of theirs) and Scoundrel Days is my favourite album of theirs. First time seeing them was when I was 15 at the Hammersmith Odeon (then the following day coming down with chicken pox LOL!). Seen them quite a few times since but my most memorable gig from theirs was at Dock Rock at the Ex-Cel in London in 2006 and queuing from 10am on the hottest day of that year and having a blast with other fans. And I finally got to the front row. I was red raw from the sun, the security and police were marvellous (dishing out water and umbrellas to give us shade). I looked a right mess but I was so happy. Second best gig was a small gig in Shoreditch a few years back, where I won a pair of tickets and gave one to another fan over a fan forum and finally getting Mortens autograph (which I never thought in a million years I would get).
Difficult to pinpoint my fave 80s band, apart from U2, several of whose best songs came later. Madness are an example, and of Aha's songs I also liked I've Been Losing You best Qwerty!
Madness were the best British singles band from 1979-1983 IMO. Rise and Fall was a brilliant album as were One Step Beyond, 7 and Absolutely. Hell even the latest two albums they've done have been great!
One Step Beyond
My Girl
Night Boat to Cairo
Bed and Breakfast Man
Baggy Trousers
Embarrassment
Grey Day
Cardiac Arrest
Shut Up
It Must Be Love
House of Fun
Driving in My Car
Our House
Tomorrow's (Just Another Day)
Wings of a Dove
The Sun and the Rain etc.

Several of these fave Madness songs of mine are rarely played on the radio these days.
It drives me crazy when people slag the 80s off for being all Stock Aitken and Waterman and bad heavy metal. My highlights would be:
The Smiths - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
The Cure - A Forest
Pet Shop Boys - Left to My Own Devices
Cocteau Twins - Aikea Guinea
Siouxsie & the Banshees - The Last Beat of My Heart
Human League - Love Action
Kraftwerk - Computer Love
Honourable mentions to ABC, Madness, Yello, Echo & the Bunnymen and Yazoo.

A-ha really did have some strong tunes out in the 80's. Many people forget that about this band. Another top 80's band for me are Deacon Blue. Caught them live once and they brought the house down.
No one has mentioned Wham!, I seen a programme on VH1 10-15 years ago and it mentioned that Wham! were the most commercially successful band of the 1980's.

Christ yeah and Frankie goes to hollywood to. Come on how many wore the tee-shirt with "Frankie says" and then "relax" on the back. My mother bought me one not knowing what the hell the slogan meant and had me wearing it on holiday around torquay.

Ahh.. such a good decade for music.
Scoundrel Days has to be one of my all time favourite albums, primarily down to Weight of the Wind and the soft rains of april (which is epic).
Pleasuredome - recently did a trip back up north to visit my sister, and on the way there and back, all i listened to was the Pleasuredome, for about 8 hours. WELCOME!!!!!
And as for Duran Duran. Been a fan since 7 and the ragged tiger, always wanted to be Simon (something to do with Yasmin).
