Jewellery Valuation

I've got a few bits of jewellery that belonged to my mum - I've kept them for years and never worn them because they really aren't "me", so after some soul-searching I've decided to sell them and use the proceeds to buy one piece that I love - earrings, necklace - and that will still remind me of her.

Problem is I have no idea whether it's worth anything or not. I know her wedding rings are gold and there's a pair of gold earrings, but as far as I'm concerned the rest could equally be valuable or worthless.

Has anybody got any experience with getting stuff like this valued and any tips or things to watch for to make sure I don't get ripped off?

Call round your local independant jeweller and ask them if they could have a look and if they buy gold.
