Online pirates could face jail terms of up to 10 years under plans being considered by the government.
Online copyright infringement currently carries a maximum penalty of two years' imprisonment.
Ministers have launched a consultation on increasing it to 10 years - bringing it into line with copyright infringement of physical goods.
The government said tougher sentences would act as a "significant deterrent

I will accept apologies by PM only (you know who you are).

Yes, because I could quite happily take 2 years in prison, but 10 just makes it not worth the risk...

Gotta love how they think it deserves so much punishment compared to actual serious crimes that ruin lives.

To Tories economic crime is the worst. Keep your hands off of our stack.

Not so sure this will make much of a difference tbh
The proposed measures are mainly targeted at the distributors of pirated content - the people creating copies of movies, sometimes before release, and uploading them to be downloaded by thousands upon thousands.

It's not, the police are clear to point out, aimed at small-time downloaders - although there are other ways and means to prevent that too.

It's going on world wide so I'm not convinced a UK initiative will have such an effect.

No idea what the OP is referring to by "gloating" and asking for messages of apology?? Either way, these are merely proposals at the minute. It remains to be seen if MPs do a U-turn, or if they forge ahead with these plans, how does it address the issue of actually preventing or bringing those responsible to justice?

If 2 years didn't stop the uploaders then I doubt 10 is.

I watched The Imitation Game recently. God, I'm glad I didn't pay for it.

All due respect to Cumberbatch et al, but it was a dire travesty of a script

You seriously think that that will stop people from downloading pirated films etc? I don't think so. I don't know why you're gloating for because nothing's happened to gloat about.

Edit: Not everyone illegally downloads films etc instead of buying them.

as one of the longer serving members of DS, you should certainly know that he's been writing the same phrase for nearly ten years now without success :)

it's got about as much meaning in it as me saying rachel riley is coming round my flat later on for a cup of tea ;)

It worked well as fiction loosely based on fact.

You should still have paid for it though!

If this proposal is successful, it's absolutely disgusting that the current government would think that rape is a far lesser crime than illegally downloading a film. If they say they didn't, then why do rapists only get far lesser than 10 years? This is as far as I know.

Yes. All I can say in mitigation, is that I am not a big Pirateer (1 movie per year, perhaps, and I don't re-seed) and I wouldn't have gone to the cinema or bought the DVD but would have waited for the TV Freeview release, which I am sure will come in due course.

It's just Time-shifting, but in an unorthodox manner

Increasing the sentence for a rarely-prosecuted crime seems more like a PR move than anything else.

Piracy is never going to be stopped, I remember renting out videos I from Ritz back in the day & doing tape to tape, or buy an awful shaky cam job from a car boot sale. Tho The only things I download illegally now is shows at USA pace & any bluray that I have purchased, so that I can watch the film on any of my devices, I don't really care if the industry want me to pay for each format of the film ad it just isn't going to happen.

Every year the industries / government come up with a new idea to stop piracy & every year they fail misrablely. A few months ago they announced that they had closed down a bunch of sports streaming sites & within hours of them closing the sites, at least a handful of new ones appeared, so 3pm Premier League games will continue to be streamed next season.

End of the day is that hardcore pirates are always one step ahead of the government as they always find a work around.

The golden era of piracy will not close.

Single offence of rape by single offender: 5 years custody - victim 16 or over
8 years custody - victim 13 or over but under 16
    10 years custody - victim under 13

People will just by-pass servers in countries where laws aren't as strict. For example if this came in people could route through Ireland, Switzerland, etc. instead.

It seems like the UK is beginning to morph into a nanny state - first porn blocks and now ridiculous copyright laws. Internet piracy will never be stopped.

I bet he's looking in the mirror at his big fat, sweaty, greasy face practising his gloat technique.

I suspect he has a face like Jimmy Carr, one you want to slap.
