I forgot to mention this, but I will never understand how Thriller was only #10
The success of the album didn't help-I mean it was released a year after the album by which that time has sold bucket loads.
The video came out around the same time and the result was more people then decide buying the album. I know it seems odd but people became focused on the album.
Take On Me by A-Ha beaten to number one by some poxy woman called Jennifer Rush and her truly awful Power Of Love. Sad thing is Take On Me got to number one by some boyband called A1 in 2000

Thriller was obviously a big thing because of the video. The video was released to buy at the same time as the single.
I might be totally wrong but maybe the video sales were not counted for chart positions. So if people bought the video they may not have bought the single too.
Maybe someone else will know if that's correct or not.

I don't think it did, as it was released as a Tape rather than a video single. But I'm not sure. I don't think video singles existed that far back, but after Thriller they became very common.
I was listening to that as I scrolled through the thread. Classic summer song, in my opinion.
Same...a brilliant record. I was like How on earth did this NOT go to #1? The UK has a really bad track record of great #2 records v poor #1 records...happens all the time!

I think because by the time it was released everyone already had the album. Thriller was the 5th or 6th single to be released from the album. I think at the time it was previously unheard of to release so many album tracks as singles. Most released just a couple.

Britney Spears - Till The World Ends, I Wanna Go
I agree.
That one, and "In the Air Tonight" not making it was another travesty.
