No word on any planned air strikes yet.

I quite like the little tram they've currently got running up and down Princes - admitted it looks a little cheap and isn't worth several hundred million pounds - and the seats are open to the elements so people can get wet - but it is red and I like red

I see the tram project is back in the news
    http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/politics/edinburgh-city-council-spend-9m-1342553

I was in Edinburgh back at Easter and saw the city centre mess for myself. Incredible! Will they ever get this project "back on the rails"?

It is an utter shambles and jeopardises any future large scale projects of this nature.

This sums up what's wrong with the British economy today. Too many 'consultancies' and 'management experts' and 'auditors', who rake in fat fees but don't actually get anything done...

    I think you mean:

Too many 'consultancies' and 'management experts' and 'auditors', who rake in fat fees but don't actually do anything constructive or worthwhile.

In the case of the Deloitte investigation, it had a worthwhile outcome as it uncovered widespread fraud and corruption in two of the council's property departments that led to 11 officials being sacked and 4 officials facing criminal charges (alongside some of their family members who were involved in the fraud). Several other officials remain suspended while the Fiscal reviews whether any criminal charges should be brought against them too. A few were demoted followed internal disciplinary hearings.

One of the departments involved, which ripped off city residents for more than £10 million over the past 7 years, is to be shut down completely as a result.

Now if only the rest of the Council wasn't incompetent...

We need a thorough cleansing of the political Augean stables... :(

Anyway how hard is it to build a new tram system? Manchester & Nottingham among others seemed to have managed it quite well.

Point of Order, Mr Speaker! It's not a tram system. It's no longer even a tramline. We may, sometime in the unspecified future, be lumped with half a tramline that nobody wants.

Why have they even bothered with a tram system, it follows the exisiting railway line. Edinburgh had to have one because big cities in England have them. A waste of nearly a Billion pounds, better spent building decent housing for the cities less well off.

Resurrecting an old thread but this was what Google threw up.

Worked in Edinburgh about the time that the tram project started. Caught the airport bus every week. So after all this time they've produced a service that takes five minutes longer than the bus for £750m. Bargain.

It's not a replacement for the 100 or 22 services, more an additional choice. And it serves more areas than the 100 and is not just for passengers going to/from the Airport from/to Edinburgh City Centre/Haymarket/Waverley the way the 100 is and has been for all this long.

For those going to the airport it was terrible passing the airport coming from the west or north and then having to come back west again by bus to the airport. Gogar interchange and the tram will solve that problem.

Though it would have been even better if they opened a station by the airport entrance. Why could they not use Edinburgh Park station as an interchange for the airport with bus or tram.

Actually the 100 bus serves the many hotels along the Corstorphine corridor whereas the tram serves, well, nothing.

The 100 must be pickup only coming from the City Centre and setting down only coming from the airport. It's not your standard Lothian buses service.

You can't use your standard ridacard on the 100.

If you are going to Waverley from a Corstorphine hotel you have to use the standard service.

I would not say the Nottingham tram has been a success.

To fund the extension they imposed the workplace parking levy, so people have to pay to park at work. People were not happy with this so they parked on the street. This meant that local residents had nowhere to park, causing frustration.

The socialist councils response to this was to paint vast areas on Nottingham with yellow paint, so parking restrictions for everyone, even residents. Still a nice little earner for Comrade Urqaurt, so she can go play with her trainset

    Nope.

You can get on and off at any of the Airlink stops. For example, if you try the journey planner on the LB site for Waverley to the Holiday Inn at the Zoo it will recommend the 100 as one option. If you don't go beyond Maybury, you can actually pay a normal £1.50 fare (a few people use it to commute in comfort).

Ridacards are valid on all Airlink journeys. National concession cards are also accepted (except on Night buses in common with the Nxx services). By contrast only City of Edinburgh Council concession cards are valid on the trams.

After several years of utter shambles, and hundreds of millions of `British Pounds` the people of Edinburgh cheer as the first tram has started on its awaited journey, and Alec must be relieved to see the end of this Scottish fiasco :o

What has not been reported is that the average travel to work time has increased by 20 mins for non tram users, and in the very first days of trams is that initial monitoring of air quality has plummeted.

Slower journeys = encouraging bus and tram use :D

And Harvey Nicks & Louis Vouitton - I've just realised that the tram system is a Plot By Alex Salmond to get Chinese tourists into and out of the country as quickly as possible :D
