There was a small pull in my carpet which is starting to unravel the carpet surrounding it. It didn't help yesterday that when I hoovered over it the pull got caught up in the suction of the Hoover and pulled it even worse. Can anyone suggest either a coloured tape or clear tape that I can put over it until I can decide on a buying a new carpet

If you are going to buy a new carpet may I suggest singeing the area, be careful.

I'm guessing it's a loop pile rather than cut pile carpet and what you should do, is with a small pair of scissors neatly cut the snagged ends off level with the carpet surface and then if necessary use a small amount of waterproof glue and re-burl the yarn. Re-burl means to take a darning needle or other strong needle (or even the tip of a ballpoint pen) and push the yarn back into the backing.

For info loop pile is more prone to snagging than cut pile.
