Energy utility bills

Hi

I have accounts with British Gas and EON.
Bills from both charge different rates for the KWh eg first 500 kwh at x pence and 800 kwh at y pence.

The amount of kwh at which the rates change don't seem to make sense.

Can anyone explain them to me?

I used to work for a utility company a few years ago, so my memory might be a bit shaky, but I think charging a higher rate for the first so many units used replaced the former standing charge.

The higher rate is worked out as so many units a day (I have a figure in my head of the first 2.5 but not 100% sure thats correct). So if the bill is over 90 days then the higher rate is charged on 225 units, units used after this are charged at the lower rate. The number of units varies from bill to bill as only very rarely do the quarterly bills come out every 90 days.

Hope that makes sense and I haven't made a pigs ear out of explaining it.

That's exactly right Cariad, or at least it is for the company I work for.

(edit: now i've seen your location, it's probably for the same one you did!)

    Thanks.
I'll get the bills out and see if I can link what you say to my figures. :)
