Now, what's interesting is that it also is pretty big on launching directions with Google Maps. (for places you've recently searched for, calendar appointments that require travel and journey home warning of travel delays, amongst others) How does iOS handle these?
No notifications... So it only works if the Google Search app is open.
That's quite a drawback - notifications are one of the best bits of Google Now for me. The "Leave by 15:42 to arrive on time" and "Heavy delays on M1 to work" notifications definitely are worth their weight in gold, and I wouldn't say Google Now is useless without them, but it's certainly crippled.
As already mentioned, it seems to leave the GPS on all the time. Most worryingly, this seems to be the case even when you force close the app. I'm going to have to disable Google Now completely, because I don't want GPS on all the time.

Definitely. Even if it was just a notification to say that new cards are available, it would be better than nothing.
If Google maps isn't installed, will Google Now get its travel delays data from somewhere else (and what if Apple Maps gives different details for travel time), and how will it fire up Apple maps with e.g. directions to a place you've searched for, particularly if that place is either in a different location on, or entirely absent from, Apple Maps....

Oh, I see what you mean. I doubt it would launch Apple Maps. More likely to launch the mobile version of Google Maps in Safari.

I really do like google now notifying me about traffic to work, I have location reporting on so over a couple of weeks it seems to learn when I leave for work and if there is any delays it lets me know before I leave the house in the morning.
Searching on any device while logged into your google account will be used for Google Now, so yep. Its of more use if you also use Google Calendar and Gmail.
Cool, we both use google calendar and gmail anyway.

Cant you just globally disable GPS like on Android?
Wow, no push notifications then? That makes this shit. I wonder if its to get it under Apples radar, so they dont reject it as being too useful, and competitive with Siri? Though its nothing like it.
cool, that sounds a little bit like on android, just less flexible.
I'm not sure exactly how it works, to be honest. I think Location Reporting tracks your every move, essentially. You can then look at exactly where you've been on a map, as I've seen Android users do before. Location Services just used location data periodically to provide relevant cards. At least, I think that's how it works!

Yeah, it doesn't make sense. I can't see any reason why the app couldn't have push notifications, even if just to tell you that you have new cards. Ideally, in the menu where you can choose which cards to display, you'd be able to choose which ones have push notifications. For example, I might like to see cards for local photo opportunities, but I don't need to be notified of them.

That is a very good point actually. So i really dont understand why having GPS enabled would kill the battery. It doesn't on Android. Only if the app is running in the background using it all the time. But i though Apple didn't allow that?

Can you do different notifications on the bar from an app now in iOS? I didn't realise.

Yes it launches maps in safari on my iPad. Don't know if it would open google maps app on iPhone though, not sure iOS would let it.
GPS seems to be constantly on for a lot of people so I don't know how that bug never got picked up during testing.
Google app > Settings > Privacy > Location Reporting OFF

It does open the Google Maps app on the iPhone.

Google should be able to launch maps if the app is installed though. Apps can setup custom shortcuts, much like www: mailto: or ftp:.
That surprises me .
Yeah, but I don't want to turn it off globally. I still want apps to be able to use GPS, just not constantly even when I don't have them open.
Anyway, the fix is as above. Turning off Location Reporting means the app can still use location data but it doesn't track you all the time.
