Well you deff havent lost all ur stuff for starters
Does it give you option to start up in safe mode?
If you can then you can probably do a system restore. (depends on your operating system)
System restore wont lose any documents etc.
Nope it won't let me that far. It just says it cannot start and to do a repair screen on it and it wont work Balls. Is it fecked?
Check this search out. May have some answers there.

ps. dont panic and reinstall windows till youve exhuasted other avenues.
The problem could be 100's of things.
Sounds like a corrupted boot file. If you can get into a CMD/DOS prompt screen i can tell how you can rebuild it.
When starting up if you keep pressing F8 to get to Advanced Boot Menu.
Try Safe Mode, if that doesnt work try Last known good configuration if that doesnt work stick the cd in that came with the laptop.
With the recovery cd you'll be able to restore your windows to factory settings and there should be an option which saves your files to a folder in the new installation
How do I get the CMD/DIOS promt up? Don't have CD either BALLACKS
It is very rare indeed that you can't retrieve any data at all unless someone has been stupid enough to reformat and reinstall from scratch.
The drive can almost always be removed, connected to another computer via USB or external SATA and most the data recovered.

Safe Mode won't delete your files.
Safe Mode is just a basic configuration, with minimum programs and drivers running. It's designed to give you access to Windows.
If you can get it to recognise an external HDD, or a pen drive, you should back-up your personal files, before proceeding any further.
If course, ideally, your data should already have been backed up.
Safe mode wont open for me
Any chance it's a hardware problem, rather than a problem with the OS?
Could be. Ill prob take it down to IT department tomorrow in my friends uni, afraid I will loose files otherwise.
Edit: my feeling is the Vista or Windows 7 Repair CD needs to fix the boot information. Or a System Restore tried.
If it can't then a manual fix is needed.
If you have a W7 machine, you use any other W7 machine to make the repair disc.
If the laptop crashed, there's a good chance that file corruption has occurred and running chkdsk /r will fix it.
Or as above, using System Restore might fix it, but you'll need to boot into the recovery environment. You might be lucky and already have it installed. If so, there will be an option called 'Repair Your Computer' on the boot menu (accessed by pressing F8 when you switch on). If not, you'll need the relevant disk.
But as your files are so important, you are right to leave it for someone else to sort out. Just remember, if you do get your files back, make the effort to back them up, or next time you may not be so lucky.
I usedKnoppix 5.
Always worth burning one now. You never know when you might need it.

boot your dell from this.gparted should run and will confirn the disk partitions are still there if hardware ok.
if no joy then either run dell system recovery from hard disk or use gpartrd and boot into the recovery partition.
restoring original operating will overwrite system partition. then use recuva freeware to get back as much of the data as u can ......
..... if using recova run from memory stick and save to another memory stick. otherwise youre overwriting the the files you wish to recover ......
If they can get access to the HDD, they can rescue them, before re-installing Windows.
Mind you, it's starting to sound more like a hardware problem, than a OS problem.
