Apologies for the DM link... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3085153/Up-1-000-day-stop-paying-BBC-licence-fee-claiming-no-longer-TV-watch-catch-services.html
Up to 1,000 households a day have stopped paying the BBC licence fee by claiming they only watch catch-up services or do not own a TV.
During a 15-month period to the end of last year 500,000 homes said they did not have a television, figures from the Broadcasters' Audience Research Board show.
Although some houses may have still bought a licence to cover watching shows on a mobile device or tablet, others have apparently bypassed paying the £145.50-a-year fee in a move that could have lost the BBC up to £72.8million.

Is the beginning of the end for the LF I wonder?

    How weird of the Daily Mail not to have a similar article about how "thousands of people each year have stopped paying to read the Daily Mail".

    Funny that.

    I don't think quite yet.

    Mind you, given that a lot of people no longer use a land-line telephone, the situation should have been foreseen.

    Funny that.

    Not really, all red tops have lost circulation, only the Daily Express has lost fewer readers, but only marginally and the Mail still outsells it by more than three to one.

    It's a loophole the government have already indicated they will put a stop to.

    Let's hope they are all caught and dealt with appropriately. As it's the Daily Mail...one of the BBC's biggest fans...

    So are these people who have newly stopped or people who have never had one, or not had one for years?

    There is a very important difference between counting people who have not had one for years, and people who have newly stopped.

    Haven't read the article but does the Daily Mail give the rising number of people who think it is a fascist piece of toilet paper only useful to wipe their arse on?

    Meanwhile in other news the number of TV licences....

    2003/4 - 23,898,749
    2013/14 - 25,419,296

    An increase of 1,520,547

    Daily Mail Circulation

    2003/4 - 2,343,000
    2013/14 - 1,557,000

    There are almost a million more Lib Dem voters than buyers of the Daily Mail.

    The population has soared in all those years so in real terms its a decrease. Also i've noticed the younger generations don't seem to bother with getting a TV Licence, they don't believe in it and good on them. If enough other people had the balls to stand up and fight for Freedom then we could finally be Free to own our own televisions in our own houses without having to subscribe to a forced BBC Pay TV Package we don't want.

    This is the Digital age buddy and its making the TV Licence unenforcable and obsolete.

    The digital age is also killing Print newspapers. But the Daily Mail has successfully made the transition to online and is now the WORLDS Number one.

    Mail Online goes top of the world

    Exactly. The article is very short on detail. Are these people just now going licence free? Or are these the people that have always been licence free?

    Now you are a Freedom Fighter ready to man the barricades?

    Facts are facts...

    Census
    2001 = 59m
    2011 = 63m
    An increased population of 6.8%

    TV Licences
    2001 = 23,157,215
    2011 = 25,226,072
    An increase of.....8.8%

    That's an increased population of 6.8% while the number of TV Licences has increased at the faster rate of 8.8%.

    What were you saying about a decrease in real terms in the number of TV Licences?

    Or are they just people that don't renew straight away and chance it?

    Saying 1000 per month stop paying is misleading, since there is no way of telling if they didn't get one after say a month.

    Hope they start to clamp down, there is a special place in hell for Tax Evaders, and that is what these people are if they continue to watch TV (likely).

    The critical mistake you've made is listing what people were doing in 2011. That is totally irrelevant, the FACT is since the end of 2014. 1000 people a day are standing up and fighting for their rights to stop the injustice of threat of jail and intimidation to be forced to subscribe to BBC pay TV.

    People have had enough of it and its finally going. Bury your head in the sand all you like.

    Wrong.

    The readership of the Daily Mail is the highest its ever been and is the highest of any Newspaper on the whole planet.

    Maybe it should become that Media Tax or added to Council Tax or something. Nothing worse than freeloaders watching stuff without contributing to the making of it.

    So, there we have it. That bastion of journalism, The Daily Mail is the standard by which all quality journalism should be measured. I really hope the BBC raise their game and ensure that all of their news is devoted to stories on Robin Thicke, The Kardashians, The Beckhams, The Royal family, health scares, who looks fat this week, who looks emaciated this week, everything about the two Katies (Price and Hopkins), sex scandals of minor celebrities and politicians, TOWIE on holiday, Gastric banding and bypasses, plastic surgery, animal rescues, 'hilarious' fakeries and not forgetting that EVERYTHING causes cancer and at the same time most of those same cancer causing agents also cure it.

    We should thank the Daily Mail too for the amazing work it did to highlight the dangers of the MMR vaccine based on a lambasted study by the now struck off doctor Andrew Wakefield, leading to measles epidemics in Wales and London where countless children's lives were affected forever. Another victory for quality journalism.

    Isn't it wonderful we have the Daily Mail for the future in order that journalism standards remain at a high level because obviously the popularity of its website equates to unparalleled journalism.

    The LF will be a part of general taxation before long, which is precisely how it should've been for years.

    The independence of the BBC (political and commercial) is sacrosanct. It is why it has always been funded via the licence fee. The only acceptable replacement which guarantees it's political and commercial independence whilst acknowledging changes in technology is via the Broadcasting Levy.

    Yes, these people are FREEDOM fighters, fighting for the freedom to not pay their licence fee and fighting for the freedom to pay Murdoch hundreds of pounds a year instead. Makes those suffragettes and anti-slavers look like small beer, right?

    If a tax of £150-odd quid a year makes your blood boil, I hate to see what you're like when your yearly tax demand comes in. You must surely sponteneously combust.

    Nonsense. It's separate because the BBC is a separate body from the government.

    A part of me can't wait for the Tories to start hacking away at the BBC. Imagine the howls of protest and the rivers of blood when the Beeb start canning Poldark and Holby City.

    Forget EU membership and human rights - that's when middle england will turn against the Tories again. And what will the Daily Mail do then? Start blaming immigrants for their readers' fave shows being sh*tcanned?

    You are the Freeloaders wanting to force us to pay towards your BBC Pay TV package. If you enjoy inane programming like Mrs. Browns boys then fair enough but you pay for it and not expect us to pay for your frivolous entertainment needs. :o

    That z list 'celebrity' shite sounds more like the sun! You do realise the Mail only report on studies/research that other people do? They don't just make this stuff up.

    The critical mistake you've made is listing what people were doing in 2011. That is totally irrelevant, the FACT is since the end of 2014. .

    Official UK population estimate (ONS) 2013: 64.1 million, increasing at 400,000 a year = 2014: 64.5 million.

    Official UK population estimate (ONS) 2004: 60.0 million.

    Increase in 10 years 7.5%, which is 1.1% greater than the increase in the number of TV licences over the same period (25,419,296 - 23,898,749 = +6.4%). So yes, there has perhaps been a recent slow-down. Though we need to be cautious here as much of the population increase may be from an increase in the birth rate, which would not filter through to TV licences for a couple of decades or more.

    But the increase in TV licences would be much greater if Government implement their suggestion of requiring a licence for catch-up TV viewing... as they should. Catching the avoiders in the net is just a matter of time.
