Great appointment Dave. Chairman and manager gone and heading for League 1.

Can't help but have a little chuckle.

I'm curious as to the reasons, I know the results haven't been good and it doesn't work out well for all managers at every club, but his record hadn't been that bad previously and Wigan seemed to be a decent fit for him. I'd have backed him to get them out of League One at the first go. I wonder if they have seen the FA report, which was dangling above him like damocles sword.

Let's face it, it was a stupid appointment to begin with and Dave Whelan made himself look a right prat whilst trying to defend MacKay's past comments.

Whelan broke his leg in the cup final and mentions it every chance he gets.

Malky was a poor choice to begin with. A bad PR hiring, which caused Wigan huge damage and their reputation will need to be rebuilt.

Or rather he revealed himself to have archaic views that appear racist in today's society and completely unacceptable.

Wigan have been punching above their weight for years. League 1 is the right level for a club of their size.

I don't really have much sympathy for MacKay.

Thought that for Owen Coyle but it wasn't to be. 3 managers since Martinez left now, Coyle, Rosler & now Mackay gone. Can't say any of them did anything near a decent job their mind!

Although Wigan were relegated they had just won the FA cup, still had a half decent team and there were quite a few decent managers available around the time Martinez walked.

Instead he decided to go for Coyle, recently sacked at Bolton for poor results and no contract to pay up.

If Whelan hadn't took the cheaper option first off he might not be in the pickle he's in now with Wigan flirting with League 1.

Similarly, Manchester United had just won the league,Fergie retired and then we hired the ball boy.

So,did none of the top managers want to come or were United also going for the cheaper option?

Wigan's descent down the leagues is as remarkable as their ascent up them.

    A proper boing boing club.

United were going for a Ferguson clone forgetting that Moyes didn't have the managerial experience behind him in terms of winning titles/Champions League (bar one forage into the qualifying round). Plus Ferguson took over a club in trouble; Moyes took over a side which had just won the title - different pressures entirely. I can see why they did it but the logic was very flawed. I hope Moyes can rebuild his career at Real Sociedad now.

As for Wigan - I have the feeling it's too little too late.

I don't have a problem with Moyes now he has left Utd although there were quite a few rumours that he wasn't that popular with folk within the club and I'm not referring to the players either.

What I do have a problem is some of the sniping about how he wasn't given enough time. It wasn't nice seeing him get sacked but when it happened there was a relief that it was the right thing to do.

He was completely out of his depth and the Utd job isn't something you can just grow into similarly as with other big clubs. Christ knows what they were thinking but it seems to me that there is some blame shifting with no one taking responsibility for such a monumental cock up.

I wonder if there is more to this than just having a very poor record and probably not playing very "attractive" football?

Is Mackay still under investigation from the FA...?

Let's be honest, Wigan have been on some sort of fairy-tale ride for the past fifteen years. They will probably yo-yo between L1 and the Championship overt the next ten years.

if honest, wigan stayed in the premier league for years, by having a good spell in april/may, the season they went down they won the cup, winning that could have been the death nail, the season after they had the europa eague and the championship, if pl clubs find the europa league hard with 38 games, imagine 46 games

if youre not one of the big teams, i think premier league time is limited anyway.

what wigan can hope for is that they do a soithampton who back in the 90s scrapped every year, but eventually went down but then came back up.

or they could do a coventry

as an everton fan it was sad seeing him fail, i dont think his time at man u done his health that good, every week he looked greyer and pastier.

...have to agree..whelan's a nice guy with wigan's interests at heart but employing a homophobic racist was always gonna end in tears...

Malky MacKay While I cannot agree with the comments he made I wonder just how many people would be in hot water if their bosses had access to all the phone messages and texts they send.

I don't think that detracts from the fact he was a good manager. If you look at his performance at Cardiff compared to what came afterwards you have to say he did a good job. After 136 days at the club you cannot really judge him on Wigan it is not enough time to change what ever the problem is.

This to me the puzzle with Wigan they on paper at least have a squad that should be pushing the play off at least. I suspect moral is the biggest factor. Going down the division you often see clubs go down again as they fail to adjust to live in that division. The good news is that often you see the opposite happen when clubs get a back to back promotion.

I expect a clear out of the stars maybe a focus on the youth players a bit more but I hope they can bounce back. They are a good club aside recent events with Malky and Dave people should not judge them on that alone they have been a decent side in the premiership for a while.
