News just broken in the last few minutes it seems. Very sad news. At least he had a fairly significant amount of time once he got out of jail and reached the highest office in his country and achieved freedom for so many people. R.I.P.

    RIP Nelson Mandella.

Your long walk to freedom has ended and you deserve the rest and the tributes that will surely follow.

    A sad day indeed.

I bet Gideon's well cheesed off as this is gonna bump his Autumn Statement right off the news headlines.

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

    Wise words indeed.

So did I. Like many people I joined the movement to free him, an amazing man who never showed any bitterness to those who imprisoned him.

I have spent a bit of time in SA over the years and know lots of people from that most beautiful land. From the most moving national anthem, I hope that the nation remains peaceful.

    Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso,
    O fedise dintwa le matshwenyeho,
O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso,
Setjhaba sa South Afrika – South Afrika.

    RIP

I saw Mandela in 1996(-ish?) when he was in Oxford to collect an honorary degree. I was walking through the city centre with a friend when we came across a large crowd hanging around waiting for something to happen. We had no idea what was going on but soon a car with a police escort pulled up an Mandela stepped out of the car waving to us in the crowds.

One of the few truly great people I have seen in the flesh.

    Nelson Mandella (Mandiba) in Glasgow.

First city in the world to grant him such an honour.

    I am truly saddened.

The world has lost a great inspiration... so few idealists are left on this planet that fight for freedom and cause... The impact he had on people can be seen everywhere around us. His body died, but his legacy remains and as long as it’s here, he will live.

Very sad news and unlike his counterpart Mugabe he truly believed in a country that cherished and respected the rights of all of its inhabitants.
