I have read (in this morning's Metro) that money will go to Children in Need although this may just refer to the Twitter cases.

Silly comment because you have absolutely no idea what he is worth.

He deserves all he can get from people who defamed him.

No matter what your opinion of the lawsuit is, he won it, so the payout is his to do with as he wishes.

People were talking about it being 2-3 times that of the BBC settlement so it looks like ITV got off light.

just out of interest, and nothing to do with the case - in cases where people are awarded large sums in compensation, does the Chancellor get a cut or is it all tax free?

I would have thought this would be tax free on the grounds that the whole point would be to put you back into the same position you would have been had the libel not occurred - that could hardly happen if you ended up with a whacking great tax bill

It is 100% tax free. (Thde downside of course being that you don't always win but still have to pay your costs and sometimes the costs of the other party too)

Can we all line up for a payout for not being named on TV?

    Which lawsuit was this then?

You appear a little bitter. What's up?
Do you think a settlement was not deserved?

You could try but it would be a fool's errand.

McAlpine was named on t.v. as has been established in court and to the satisfaction of all news outlets.

That wont stop you denying it of course.

Have you got a link to the court case please, it seems rather quick given it was only a few weeks ago?

Can you tell us who on TV named him?

I am afraid that I haven't. You wouldn't believe it anyway.

    He was named by Schofield.

But libel damages are not designed to compensate you for lost earnings are they? - are they not designed to punish the perpetrator of the falsehood?

In relation to the Court case I would say what is being referred to here is that both the BBC and ITV have to give an apology in open court as part of the settlement.

I would suggest you don't give an apology in open court unless you think you are in thw wrong. (Although it seems some dispute this .............)

He was not named by Schofield, that's a lie.

There has been no court case about the BBC or ITV payouts, another lie.

    :(
