faulty inspiron laptop

Can anyone help with a problem I am having with my Dell Inspiron 1300.

The backlight on the machine is not working. Cannot get a picture on the screen. Fan is very quiet. A couple of the green lights come on sometimes but on other occasions the machine either will not start or loses power altogether.

Any advice?

    Does it exhibit these problems when connected to the mains? It's quite an old laptop so it's possible it's given up the ghost completely. Although a dead battery may be to blame, or a faulty power circuit; which may be an uneconomical repair.
