great soap it was too and made by my local station STV

at one point it was broadcast right accross the UK but by 1993 a large part of the ITV network dropped it with only three months notice and that placed the very survival of the show in jeopardy but it remained on air for another ten years until axed in 2003 its name having changed to just High Road long before this point

one of the versions of the theme tune was performed by a band called Silly Wizzard

my favourite in the show was always Mrs Mack
I thought of TTHR as a sort of Scots Emmerdale Farm for some reason

You can catch some early episodes on STV Player.

I loved Mrs. Mack and her hats.

I remember it well from the late Seventies (?), early Eighties. A classic afternoon soap . In my region (YTV/Tyne Tees) it was shown at around 2pm. Loved Mrs Mack and Big Morag, Dopey Dougal and Grace Lachlan (the matriarch of the time). Was definitely a Scottish version of Emmerdale, what with the big 'Hooose' and the rich family in charge of the estate etc. Good storylines too - they did far more 'gritty' stories than Emmerdale Farm did back then!
    Lovely theme music too :)

Yes, good stuff although at times it ran out of steam and drifted. More information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Take_the_High_Road

I remember watching it in the afternoons in the 80s on Tyne Tees. Didn't Mrs Mack play her twin sister every now and then and she was a lot nicer and less grumpy. I used to fancy Fiona Cunningham when she was younger in the earlier episodes i was about 10 then. Later I fancied Lynn Mcneil and Trish Macdonald (Natalie Robb).

I used to love it too, I timed my day off so I could watch it and knots landing. I was so annoyed when HTV stopped showing it, there were petitions at the time so it must have had a good following. I got all excited last year when I found one of the sky channels were showing it and then a few weeks later they closed. I would love to see it repeated from the begining.

I think my only claim to fame in life is that I was a school pal of John Stahl who played the farmer, "Inverdarroch"! :)

Sky used to have a soaps channel but oddly it did not survive.

You would think with the zillion channels out there somene could make a soap channel work with old stuff like Take the High Road, A Country Practice and The Sullivans.

Odd that soaps get the highest ratings on mainstream TV yet generate zero specialist channels on satellite and cable.

I've seen the all of the 1980 episodes, thanks to the youtube channel. I liked the scenes dealing with Brian Blair's release from prison. Some good dialogue about taking each day as it came and the stench of prison. Enjoyed the rescue helicopter scenes where Grace had her heart attack. One thing I also like about these early episodes is the references to other places in Scotland (eg Dumfries, Leuchars) and some location filming in Edinburgh.

However, I think its a pity that they didn't write the episodes so that they were "set" on/about their day of broadcast - eg no mention of Christmas during episodes which were broadcast during Christmas week.
