I loved Gareth when I was younger
But is he past his sell by date?
He seems to be trying to tring to appeal to an older market now. But I cant help feeling his had his time as "pop idol" and should now concentrate on his wife and child. What do other's think?

Last I heard he'd been playing away. (Allegedly)
Gates is being pragmatic. He has a residency on a cruise ship. It's not playing the O2, but it provides him with a wage. I'm not a fan, but honestly, I think he should be commended for just getting on with his life and not bitterly trying to recapture past glories.
If you enjoy singing and get paid lots to do it, why should you give it up? Some folk need a reality check.
Hope he doesn't return to the charts ever again
Surely the fact that he's earning a regular wage and working is supporting his family.
Sometimes I think that some people forget that "Celebs" are normal people with families to support and bills to pay.
It annoys me when some celebs get criticised for doing things like Pantomine, Cruise Ships, Adverts, Bartending, getting 9 to 5 jobs. At least they are earning money and supporting their families.
Gareth is working blooming hard at what he does best- music. Earning a living is paramount in any profession and that is exactly what he is doing.
He has just finished a 2 year stint in Les Miserables and is now enjoying doing different gigs around the country so I am not sure where "Sell By Date" fits into the equation?
Not quite sure what you mean by this. As far as I can see Gareth has spent the last 3 years appealing to people of all ages. He's done Musical Theatre, he's done gigs all around the country, including University ones, he's done numerous charity gigs and he's now taking on a 2 day cruise where he'll probably earn pretty good money. Its not as though he's signed up for a 12 months stint on the cruises. On top of that Gareth said in an interview last week that he and his band are working extremely hard on writing and laying down music with an aim to releasing another album that he implied would be rock music.
I'm sure there are lots of people in the music industry that would love to be as busy and as in demand as Gareth has been over the last few years. He's even had to turn down WE parts to pursue what he wants next in his career.
Her is a young man with his head very firmly screwed on.
Oh my! He's a little young to be destined for the scrap heap. Careers in entertainment are all about ebb and flow. Maybe he's in fact still too young to have had his moment in the sun, perhaps his best is yet to come.
It seems he knows where he is best suited and follows it. Good on him, as someone else said, at least he isn't whining like Steve whatshisface.
And good on him, working hard and doing what he loves, singing and performing.
What a ridiculous thread!
Gareth is an all round entertainer, and that is what he is doing. He is not a "pop idol", he is earning a living, how else would you suggest he supports his wife and child?
Why don't you use your brain before starting such pointless threads!
I see the Daily Mail tried to describe this particular booking as a "fall from grace", which is remarkable for a paper that normally whines about dole scroungers, and enjoys nothing more than demonising the youth of today for not being prepared to work hard etc.
On a cruise, the audience tends to be older and with more money, which is probably why the cruise companies can afford to pay such high salaries. Derren Brown is the star attraction on a cruise my auntie's going on later this year. I wonder if anyone is recommending he packs it all in too?
Gareth did a charity concert in Blackpool last week, and was asked about doing more theatre. He said he'd been offered a few parts, but had decided that after a couple of years in Les Miserables, he fancied a break, and wanted to do some of his own concerts again, and work on new music. He's also in the process of launching two performing arts academies for children and teenagers in his hometown of Bradford, and one near his current home in London, which will include sponsorship for gifted, but not so well off, children.
That's before you include the work he does with the McGuire programme. He led a couple of sessions at a recent course in Cardiff, and will be running the entire course in Galway in November.

The only problem that I can see is that Gareth doesn't seem that bothered by trying to aspire to some shallow definition of what is cool, but he does a job he loves, which is better than most of us.:D
Looks like the theater work has dried up. Cannot knock the fella for supporting his kid. The media are being a bit mean to him today.
Indeed
Why? What's he ever done to you to deserve such a mean comment ?
Wish folk in 'ere would realise that the music industry covers a whole range of performance opportunities. The pop charts is just a tiny bit, and prolly doesn't even earn as much for the country as it used to (pirating/downloading being what it is). It matters not whether he is a charting pop idol or not. He is doing what he loves... and is getting paid for it... and is giving back to the community as well with his academy ambitions.
Good luck to him I say... and I hope he doesn't get sea sick
What a refreshing post. Pity more artists in the industry don't give as much back as Gareth does. Still its the takers that get thought better of by the press as we all know.
Gareth has been in Jersey for the last few days, taking part in Jersey's Battle of Flowers where he is Mr Battle. According to the local press he's been the most popular person they've had over there for many years.
Agreed.
The guy is working. Why the hell the media think that's a reason to take the p, I have no idea.
Would they rather he sat on his arse claiming benefits or took the easy route of CBB or IAC? He could probably have made easy cash by doing a k&t or the fragrant Ms Price. I doubt he's earned anywhere near enough money to retire and anyway, he's a young man. He's got to do something for the rest of his life.
It would be a terrible waste for him to quit music. He was really very good when I saw him in Les Miserables and whatever rose he may do he has a bright future in musical theatre if he wishes. Can't say I blame him for taking a sort of break from it if he can afford it. It is a big commitment.
However, four number one singles in the UK, and millions of CDs sold here and around the world is not to be sniffed at either, no matter how eager some people have been for him to fail and all of the hate thrown at him for "not winning" and having Simon Cowell liking him.
Why was there a need for the capitals Puterkid? Or indeed for a ten year old recap. This is 2011 not 2002. Gareth is a success in his own right and certainly not for anything Simon Cowell did for him, much more a case of, `in spite of', in fact.
A lot of people dream of being a professional singer
A lot of people dream of a leading role in a West End musical with critical acclaim
A lot of people dream of international number ones and multi-platinum albums
A lot of people dream of headlining arena tours
A lot of people dream of travelling the world
A lot of people dream of owning a nice house in London
A lot of people dream of buying their parents a nice house
A lot of people dream of setting up their own businesses to give something back
Gareth's done all of those, and then some more. It's a lot more than "doing OK" by any reasonable definition and a hell of a lot better than his many critics predicted.
But let's not get carried away. Gareth is only booked on the cruise ship for two days. If he enjoys it, maybe he'll do a lot more of it, but for the time being, it's just another corporate gig.
In the meantime, Gareth is on Radio 2 tonight, as they are rerunning the "Friday Night is Music Night" he recorded last year as part of the Les Miserables 25th anniversary celebrations.

He appears to have an ongoing successful career in his chosen field, so no, I would say he's one of life's winners. Also, who say's he's not concentrating on his wife and child
Obviously someone who has no idea that his wife and child were there watching both the gigs Gareth did last weekend and any other gig that is appropriate to take a two year old child to. Gareth is so proud of little Missy he dedicated one of the songs he sang to her at the gig he did on Sunday.
All in all he is a thoroughly decent, hard-working and lovely guy who happens to fancy a two day gig on a Cruise Ship. What a crime!
Thanks for the link to Friday Night Is Music Night. Gareth is just singing a duet with John Owen Jones on there at the moment. Its beautiful.
