I have a fairly old gas boiler, its a poterton prima 40 b.

How hot should the outside metal case of the boiler get ? After touching it at the front, it is ridiculously hot, if you left your hand there it would burn you.

Is it safe to use ? I keep imagining it could explode !! ? :o

Should they get that hot ? This is after being on for about 30 minutes for the central heating

The question I would be asking is 'has it always done that?'

    Hi,

Most older boiler cases are much warmer to the touch then their modern day counter part but no hotter then say keeping your hands on the glass of your local fish & chip heat/drain cabin.

Anything hotter, have your boiler checked.

It is hot enough that if I left my hand on it for more than a few seconds it would burn my hand, like a hot warming glass unit at a fish and chip shop. Maybe a touch hotter than that. I'm guessing the boilers nearly 20 years old.
