I've been having fun trying to remember all the songs we sung in primary school in the 80s. I've counted 34 so far but I'm sure there are loads more and I'd love to hear your lists!
What songs did/do you sing? Or which songbook? What words did you change deliberately?
Here are all the ones I can remember…
Christian songs:
• All Things Bright And Beautiful
• Morning Has Broken
• We Plough The Fields And Scatter
• Lord of the Dance
• He's Got the Whole World In His Hands
• Give Me Joy in My Heart (Oil in my Lamp) (Sing Hosanna)
• Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho
• Make Me a Channel of Your Peace
• Kum Ba Yah
• This Little Light of Mine
• Amazing Grace
• Think of A World Without Any Flowers
• The Animals Went In Two By Two Hurrah!
• Who Built The Ark?
• Rise and Shine And Give God His Glory (Children of the Lord)
• This Train Is Bound For Glory
• Keep Me Travelling Along With You
• The Family of Man
• Praise Him, Praise Him, All The Little Children
• Stand Up, Clap Hands, Shout "Thank You Lord"
• The Journey of Life (Will You Ride, Ride, Ride)
• Hand Me Down (That Silver Trumpet Gabriel)
• Apusskidu
• Were you there?
• The Ink Is Black The Page is White
Non Christian:
• I Can Sing A Rainbow
• A Little Peace (by Eurovision winner "Nicole")
• He's Football Crazy, He's Football Mad
• Little Boxes (Made of Ticky Tacky)
• Puff the Magic Dragon
Does anyone remember…?
These are vague, and Google doesn't seem to have any record of them. Am I mad… in a coma… or did you sing them too? Let me know:
"Thank you for waking me this morning
Thank you for this and every day
Thank you that my cares and worries
You can take away"
or one that goes:
"Lord of the Galaxies, Cosmic Realities
Planets and stars we sing your praise"
or one that goe:
"All over the world.
Everywhere.
Where the [something]
And where the [something else].
And the green, green giant, goes to [dah]
And [dah dah something, something else]
And slowly, slowly, slowly
Somebody's house is made!" (what an odd song!)
and then there's one that I can only remember one line: "And it's turning the world upside down." Ring any bells?
Please share your memories of assembly, or songs you loved/hated. And in particular please let me know if you sung any of the songs on my list, or have any more! I am becoming obsessed now!

"... jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled, all these things I love so well..."
Any one find a link to the rest of this one??
Autumn days, when the grass is jewelled
And the silk in a chestnut shell
Jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled
All these things I love so well
So I mustn't forget
No, I mustn't forget
To say a great big thank you
No, I mustn't forget.
Clouds that look like familiar faces
And winter's moon with frosted rings
Smell of bacon as I fasten up my laces
And the song the milkman sings.
So I mustn't forget
No, I mustn't forget
To say a great big thank you
No, I mustn't forget.
Whipped-up spray that is rainbow-scattered
And a swallow curving in the sky
Shoes so comfy though they're worn out and they're battered
And the taste of apple pie.
So I mustn't forget
No, I mustn't forget
To say a great big thank you
No, I mustn't forget.
Scent of gardens when the rain's been falling
And a minnow darting down a stream
Picked-up engine that's been stuttering and stalling
And a win for my home team.
So I mustn't forget
No, I mustn't forget
To say a great big thank you
No, I mustn't forget.
Spring has come again.
God has sent the sunshine,
God has sent the rain. #
That's it - thank you!!!!!!!!
Our school is a hundred years old,
A hundred years of work and play,
Our school is a hundred years old. #
(our school centenary song)
No probs!
Has made his bed
Down in a hole
Just like a mole
My tortoise Bill
Who never keeps still
Sleeps by the wall
Where dead leaves fall #
With Little John
Were climbing up in a tree... #
# The journey of life,
May be easy, may be hard,
There'll be danger on the way.
With Christ at my side,
I'll do battle as I ride,
Against the foes that would lead me astray #
Daniel's in the li-li-li-li...
Daniel's in the lion's...
Daniel's in the lion's...
Daniel's in the lion's den #
We are the Joey's
Many, many Joey's
Everywhere we go-oooo
People wanna know-oh
Who-oo we aaaaa-are
So-oooo we tell them
We are the Joey's
[repeat over and over until someone chirps in with Ten Green Bottles]
One more step along the world I go;
From the old things to the new
Keep me travelling along with you.
And it’s from the old I travel to the new;
Keep me travelling along with you.
Round the corner of the world I turn,
More and more about the world I learn;
All the new things that I see
You’ll be looking at along with me:
Without fail someone would always say round too soon which lead to our head teachers yelling 'patience now children' XD!! Good times.
The board is black, the chalk is white, together it helps us read and write?
Just scrolled back up and see the OP something similar, is that the proper title?
The other favourite assembly one was...
God made the sun that shines on me, god made the sun and god made me.
God made the rain that rains on me, god made the rain and god made me... etc
BTW
All the songs were hand written on big white sheets of paper and held up with blue tack, none of your fancy ICT stuff then.
They had the entire 20 odd cd set and only EVER used the first one! Waste of money!
Oh I remember that one as "the ink is black, the paper's white. Together we learn to read and write. The child is black, the child is white etc"
Our headmistress was a kiwi and we had to sing it every day in Maori.
We didn't sing anything at high school.
In *** fair city where girls are so pretty
I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone
************
Through streets broad and narrow
singing cockles and mussels
alive alive O
alive alive O, alive alive O
singing cockles and mussles Alive alive O
I loved school assemblies
"We are climbing Jesus' ladder ladder"
"We are climbing Jesus' ladder ladder"
"Children of the lord..."
I forget the rest!
"the ink is black, the page is white, together we learn to read and write" I remember that too...
"If I had a hammer, I'd hammer in the morning...I'd hammer in the evening...all over this land..."
"All the nations of the earth, ........things to birth.... the greatest star the smallest flower....alleluia.....!"
We used to sing that ALL the time and I hated it!
..
"Ri-ise and shi-ine and give God the glory glory,
Ri-ise and shi-ine and give God the glory glory,
Rise and shine and (dramatic pause) give God the glory glory,
Children of the Lord."
