Student leader's anti-Jewish abuse

The president of the National Union of Students was yesterday rescued by police from angry protesters chanting anti-Jewish abuse and demanding his resignation.
Aaron Porter was surrounded by a 150-strong mob who broke away from a student fees protest in Manchester.
As 12 officers led him to safety, there were chants of ‘Aaron Porter we know you, you’re a f******* Tory too’.

A photographer said he also heard cries of ‘Tory Jew scum’.
Mr Porter, 25, a Labour Party member, was due to speak at the rally but later cancelled.

I guess some racism is still accepted in student circles. What a shame.

I doubt Porter will stay on for much longer, a career in politics will soon be his.

So one person thinks he or she heard anti-Semitic abuse and you use it to smear hundreds and thousands of students?

    Nice.

It not really racism in any sense. Or at least no more so than anti-Muslim comments in the same context.

If someone did say it, it's wrong and should be followed up. But there's no real substance behind the story so far other than oddly enough, prejudice.

I didn't do that at all, how about we stick to the topic.

I find it deeply suspicious an unnamed, uncoborrated photographer (Presumably a journalist?) was the person who heard the anti-jewish abuse. It smells of smears. My guess is that the Daily Mail was more angry about the strong anti-tory chanting so had to make up something for people to get angry about.

    What are you on about?

    Anyway, further details here:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationnews/8290571/Student-leader-Aaron-Porter-barracked-with-anti-Semitic-insults.html

Aaron Porter was escorted by officers after being confronted as he made his way to offices in Manchester. Witnesses report that among the chants directed at him from a small number of demonstrators were "
Tory Jew". Other protesters responded to the anti-semitic taunts aimed at Mr Porter by chanting: "No to racism, no to racism."

I didn't say it shouldn't be followed. But the comment itself isn't racist. Or if it is racist, then similar comments about Christians or Muslims would also be too. Religious bigotry you might describe it as.

I have no idea whether it's true or not.

Maybe you should have posted that first? Still doesn't give you grounds to label the entire student population as racist or anti-Semitic.

Racism can never be acceptable no matter what the circumstances. Unfortunately there will always be some dumb tw-ats whenever there is a rent-a-mob situation. If they really are students perhaps they are on a BNP bursary. I mean they can't be very bright if they're calling him a Tory FFS.

I was shocked to see how disturbed he was and shaken up. What a way to treat an elected leader of the Students' Union. He did not deserve all the vile abuse hurled at him.

Breaking News - students are human beings (well most of them) and some can be asinine and bigoted.

BTW shouldn't that have read I guess racism is still accepted in some student circles. as otherwise people might think that you are saying that anti-semitism is acceptable to all students.

Next - disturbing discovery about the toilet habits of Ursus arctos in forested areas.

The OP stated anti-Semitism is acceptable for students. Not some, or a specific group, but students.

It's a problem that's running through many threads at the moment, whereby, unless you add the disclaimer .............
'In no way do I mean ALL (insert group) are like this, the pedants amongst us will leap on the opportunity to claim that you do indeed mean ALL, when it's perfectly obvious (to most) that this is not the case.

Waste of time if you ask me.

The problem not everyone is so well informed such as yourself sutie.....

There are people logging onto DS for the first time, ever, there are guests, and visitors just passing by, people who have never heard of some of the stories being spoken of. They may read one of these "all X are Z" statements and agree with it simply because they see nobody questioning or assume it must be true because nobody bothered to qualify the statement. This is just one of very many reasons for us to be careful with what we post less we become lazy contributors that just keep continuing regular tit-for-tat snipes because one person likes to generalise (you may have seen that word before - you might want to consider what it means in the context of applying a "rule" to a group of people and how fair and accurate that rule is if it only applies to a subset.

As I said, because we're not all as intelligent as you are sutie, I'm afraid it is of vital important to qualify and statements we make. It's not pedantry. It's simply honest opinion and fact.

I don't understand what you mean by that.... the Johann Hari bit  Do you agree or disagree with one of his articles? I've always found them to be on-the-mark.

From beginning to end, the entire group following Porter. It started when he walked away from people asking him questions, cutting them off mid sentence, so they followed him. Other people joined - he is very disliked by a significant number of politically active students. I have yet to see a single video that shows any anti-semitic comments, and would condemn them heartily if I did. You also don't get to hear anyone shouting "No to Racism..."

Thank God for mobile phones, hey, so much more reliable than "eyewitness photographers"

It looks like yet more smear tactics from the right wing media.

Even if it did happen one can't tar the majority with the same brush.

Not on the alleged racist chants, but one can certainly call them all "thick as mince"

Porter is a member of The Labour Party and touted as a future MP.

So a bit stupid to call him Tory really. ;)
