5HD is coming eventually ,as I understand this has always been the long term plan .

I don't think that has ever been in doubt, but the only reason it currently exists at all is due to Sky 'subsidising' it.

But a bigger problem is that it's not on Freeview, and having refused to take the offered slot twice now may never be?.

Assuming it ever does make it to Freeview, I would expect it to have been on Freesat before that, and quite probably well before?.

The thread title stats " Coming soon in 2010" ,

And years later , you are left asking , is there a definite date actually been set ?

The first post clearly states "there is no timescale for when this might happen" :D

I'd suggest asking them directly here http://www.channel5.com/contact-us to make Channel 5 HD available on Freesat just like BBC1 HD, ITV HD & C4 HD and see what response you get back. If you get a numpty who cannot distinguish between Freesat and Freeview then get back to them and give them a link to the Freesat website so they can see for themselves.

Knowing Channel 5, if they do decide to launch on Freesat before 2020, they'll probably try and stick it on their current transponder and lower the quality (if that's even possible) of the current SD channels on there to accommodate it. Probably won't be worth having it on FTA satellite then!

I have to say the channel 5 sd signal improved a lot in recent months so I'd think that any hd move also would attempt to have reasonable picture quality !

You must be watching a different CH 5 satelitte service to every one else. They have reduced the digital artefacting to some degree by reducing the picture resolution, frankly the picture quality is dire. Channel 5 on Freeview is OK quality, on satellite it's pathetic

10 SD channels on a DVB-S transponder is bound to produce crap pictures. Amazing what some consider acceptable

    Hi

Just for the record: I haven't seen any improvement in Channel 5 SD's picture quality lately.

In my opinion it's still the worst picture quality I've ever seen on satellite. (And I've been watching satellite TV, in various forms, since 1985.)

    This ^

How on earth anyone can even remotely suggest Channel 5's SD PQ is getting better, i implore you to get to your nearest optician.
    Its beyond appalling.

We are talking UK PSB service , not some crap quality low grade commercial channel, none of which I would ever dream of watching anyway. Might as well go back to a vcr :D

Ch5 are crap, they can't get series recording codes right, the can't do accurate recording, they put a dog in a 4:3 frame on a 16:9 transmission so you get a ch5 dog on someones forehead :D.

They have twice bid for the the extra Freeview-HD channel and pulled out last minute.

I am just heartened that the programme quality matches the technical quality thus ensuring that there is no need to actually suffer their appalling PQ.

You can have 10 SD channels on a single DVB-S transponder, all at 704x576i resolution - it just requires them to put their hands in to their pockets and upgrade their compression hubs, times move on and Encoding efficiency does too. Look at ITV, yep I agree it's not going to break records but a damn sight better than C5.

I also managed to catch some of C5 in HD last night as my girlfriend's parents have Sky, looking through the EPG pretty much every programme was billed as HD until that Supercasino overnight junk before 1am. That's quite a turn for the books as C5 had next to no native HD output even up to a year ago.

It may have been billed as being in HD, but was it? A good chunk of Channel 5's programming is still in SD, and some of it is still in 4:3 even though it's available in 16:9.

Oh, I don't know about that as didn't see it. Thought Sky would be quite keen on things like that, maybe it wasn't as was just looking at the EPG.

I know for sure the cricket highlights on Five SD looked better on Freesat than they did on Freeview. I guess it is down to nature of the material (fast moving small object) suiting the encoding / transmission methods better.

Just to let you know this is the reply I have had from channe 5 about 5HD

    Date: 22nd February 2013

    Dear Peter

Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding Channel 5 HD.

While we do not have any current plans to launch this channel on Freesat, we are keeping the option under review for the future and your interest in seeing it made available on this platform has been noted in our Viewer Enquiries Report. This is circulated throughout the company and seen by all relevant personnel.

Thank you for your interest in Channel 5.

    Yours sincerely

    Terry
    VIEWER ADVISOR

    E-mail: customerservices@five.tv<mailto:customerservices@five.tv>
    Fax: 020 8612 7686

    This is what I asked

When is 5HD coming to FREESAT, as I know a lot more people would watch 5HD than just 5SD as they do watch BBC, ITV and channel 4 all in HD a lot people do not like sky

    www.channel5.com

May be if more of us ask the same question, 5HD may get on Freesat and FTA may happen sooner than latter:)

As Nigel G said much earlier, Channel 5 has an exclusive deal with Sky which enabled them to fund the launch of their HD service. This is why Five pulled out of Freeview HD, they couldn't afford it. Five HD may go FTA in future, but there is no talk of it in the industry that I am aware of and Five would need to be in a much different financial position than they were when they launched HD. Remember that HD rights for third party content cost more than SD and because Five is mostly imported shows the funding is more challenging.

All I see there are excuses. If they can't afford to run the channel in the proper manner, then take it away from them & give it to someone who will run it with by now, old fashioned HD output.

Humid, there isn't any exclusivity for 5, anyone can launch an HD channel on Freesat or Freeview, saying 'they' should take away their toys is ridiculous. Five can't find a way to fund free HD and I haven't seen any better suggestions.

No, people on here are like children - they expect the 'magic TV fairy' to somehow produce the millions of pounds required :p

The fifth slot on Freeview has been up for sale a number of times now - no takers. And anyone can launch a Freesat HD channel - perhaps Humid would like to do so as he thinks it's so easy :D

Personally I only ever watch the 4 main HD channels and due to C5 SD picture quality never watch it however SWMBO insist on me recording CSI for her so SD does have an advantage over HD as it only takes me 3 minutes to edit out the adverts so at least its only 40 minutes of rubbish PQ as opposed to an hour.:D
