Hi All,
Just rewatched the amazing Turn Left again....Have been a DW fan since birth and truly think this episode ranks up there amongst the all time greats but it seems underrated. Tell me I'm not the only one who thinks it is awesome?
There are many reasons for this:
1. The Dr barely features and Donna carries it all.
2. The re-imagining of life after the Dr's death and the way everything changes
3. The allusions to past historical events e.g. labour camps etc
4. Wilf!

Let me know what you think...Let's get this into the top 10 episode list!

Wag Wag!

Turn Left is probably my favourite episode of NuWho, followed closely by Blink. interesting that both are Doctor Lite!

    Thanks for your comments.
Pull: You're right: there's pretty much nothing I would change - maybe only Donna's screams and Rose's teeth (something not quite right there!)!

There's not enough Wilf love in this thread!
His reaction to the family being taken to the labour camp is outstanding acting and makes me sob every time.

Can anyone confirm if the actress playing the fortune teller has also appeared in another episode? I think she was in the one with professor Yana?

    A terrible episode.

Let me guess... because it wasn't written by your beloved Moffat? :)

One of my favourite New Who episodes, superbly written by RTD and featuring brilliant performances from Tate and Cribbens.

Youd have thought! Nah not at all. I pontificated at length about my reasons for disliking it. So wont repeat. I just think its so overrated. Compared to RTD at his very best its just poor. I would choose something like Gridlock or Love and Monsters over this all day long. Its got alot of flaws and thinks its alot more profound and serious than it actually is.

I love this episode but I know some people who don't and I don't understand why it's a great episode.

I love it too, I could watch it over and over, I love the way that the companion carries the story and it shows us what life would be without our beloved Doctor.
    Its in my top ten.

Easily my favourite Doctor Who episode ever. It's outstanding.

For me it's the last episode I really loved - though I think there might be one coming soon that changes that.

I liken it to Blink in many ways, mainly in that it can never be as good as the first time you watch it, I think. With Blink, once you know where the jumps and scares are there's a certain familiarity with the episode that wears off the novelty just a little. The same can be said for Turn Left once you know where the past references are. Fortunately both episodes also involved some strong acting and decent stories, so are still very good.

I think Rose's return here was nicely understated, ahead of her bombastic return with a massive gun in The Stolen Earth. I really enjoyed exploring Donna's family a bit more, as she'd been a bit neglected at this point - what with the focus on River in the library story, and then her near-absence in Midnight.

Beyond Rose's return and the exploration of Donna, Wilf and Sylvia's characters there were also some great one-off characters thrown in here, the bleakness seemed relentless which was a good time to do it as we were heading into arguably the biggest finale the show had pulled off at that stage (and arguably since as well), there were references to Martha, Sarah-Jane, Luke, Clyde, Maria, Jack, Gwen, Ianto...it was where the Whoniverse felt so massive and huge.
