I wish this wasn't true but sadly think it is. I am not going to be buying either machine on launch as I want to see how things pan out.
I like to pay once for a game and that's it, not be fleeced left, right and centre

So basically it will be mostly alright for you. Although good luck on the consoles, because of the closed structure of them, might turn out worse. Jump into PC gaming, its great.
For a bad example of F2P, look at all the P4F EA games. These are based on a small number of items that are free and alot of items that can give an advantage to premium players. I haven't played every P4F EA game but the ones I have have been more 'Pay 2 Win' than F2P.
If other publishers follow Valve's near perfect model then F2P is the future, if they follow EA's P2W model it would soon kill F2P.
I agree. I can see P2W becoming common on next gen consoles. That doesn't mean that I think it will happen, but I can definitely see how it could happen. The problem is, would MS and Sony allow F2P? Even if they did, I imagine that they would put fees on top of the transactions, such that it might not be financially feasible for the consumer and the dev/publisher to release an F2P game.
There was talk recently that the F2P market might be worth more than $20 billion in a few years, and the likes of LoL, TF2 & DOTA2 have proven (for now at least) that it is possible for these games to make money (at least I imagine they make a decent amount of money).
