I absolutely loved it too, but I do think the majority of its appeal and magic came from Gwion - I could see other girls doing it as much or more justice to it as Jessie.
I seriously doubt it. A lot of the charm came from Jessie and Gwion's youthful exuberance, charm, cuteness and chemistry together. I'm sure Jodie would have brought her own charm, but without the youthful exuberance and cuteness you would have been left with...well, the same nice but underwhelming duet as Jodie did with Lawrence. Sam could have brought the exuberance and cuteness, but not the chemistry, as her duet with Harry showed.
I also seem to say this again and again, but I do think Sam got a raw deal in terms of her duet song. "Singin' in the rain" isn't about a child and an adult like the other two; it's not even a duet - so it's not very surprising that there wasn't much chemistry between the two, because the song didn't give them room for interaction, and the choreography wasn't as intimate as the other two's.
Sam's problem wasn't the song or choreography, but rather that she and her partner were so focused on singing to the audience and making sure they always faced the camera that they completely forgot about interacting with each other, except for the parts where the choreography forced them to, of course. For example, when Sam was embracing Harry with the umbrellas and they were swaying together, that was a perfect setup for them to interact more, but they didn't take advantage of it. If Harry had leaned against Sam and they had sung that part looking at each other, it would have been a thousand times more effective, but they were too busy smiling at the cameras to notice each other. The same thing happened for the rest of the duet, where they only looked at each other when forced by the choreography to do so, and even then they just faced each other without any affectionate body language.
Compare Sam's body language to Jodie's and Jessie's in the duet. Even while facing the audience to dance side by side with the Olivers , Jodie and Jessie kept glancing down and leaning towards their partners, while Sam was too busy mugging for the cameras to looking at Harry. Even when facing Harry Sam would just look at him with her eyes, while Jodie and Jessie would lean or slightly bend forward towards their Olivers, like you do when you want to slightly lower yourself closer to a child's height to make it easier for the child to look at you.
Sam's problem was not the song. Her problem was that she sang it as though it were part of a TV variety act instead of a piece of musical theater filmed for TV. That was the difference between Sam's duet and Jessie's duet. Sam and Harry were two people performing next to each other for the audience, while Jessie and Gwion were singing with each other as though they were completely alone in their own little world, making the audience feel as though we were lucky to be able to sneak a peek to watch them.
Singing in the rain is not a duet and its for adults its not nice and fluffy its about a guy falling in love and not caring about the weather he is being soaked in.
Hardly cute and cuddly............it was a bad choice of song .. for cute and cuddly..

Welcome! I absolutely loved your post especially the bolded bit. You have demystified what I found magical about the performance. They were both singing to each other rather than singing with each other

Actually she's 5"6ish... Sarah was 4"11 and she was taller than all of them (just, but still )!
I LOVED this performance. I never expected Jessie to have such a good maternal instinct! I thought I was maybe being bias because Gwion is my favourite Oliver, but it really was a superb performance. The best of the duets by far! (Though I felt Sam and Harry were hindered slightly by their choreography and song choice)
Yes, Truly Scrumptious was lovely, but to be fair; Gwion is just the definition of cuteness and that song adds to that.
I've said it before on other threads, but I'll say it again, just because I'm stubborn that way :
I think they should have had all of the girls perform with the boys more, throughout the series. I think it would have made a huge different for both the girls and the boys if we had seen more interaction. The way she connects with children is a big part of Nancy's character and I think if all the girls could have done duets with the boys, we might have had a completely different final.
Partly agree but I DO think that Jessie did this much better than the other 2 girls would have done - it wasn't just Gwion. Maybe it's cos she's the eldest of 5 but she seemed a total natural with kids to me (I noticed her in Food Glorious Food too).

I thought Truly Scrumptious more than lived up to it name. Jessie was one of my early favourites for the role, but I've been disappointed by her recently. However, she did this duet perfectly, and Gwion and she just seemed to love doing it. It was really infectious.

I was amazed. Because people have been saying that she wasn't that good with the olivers. I thought she was absalutly brilliant with gwion. That certainly would be hard to teach.
They just worked so well together, regardless of the song song chioce.
In work today and visiting my friends and family yesterday. Noone minded that Jodie won (except my Mum, who couldn't stand her ) but, everyone was in agreement that Jessie and Gwion were the highlight of the show.
totally agree. The most natural non - contrived performance of the night. I think that Jodie was brilliant as well - she is a lovely warm bubbly girl and the public really love her.
however I think Jessie suffered in geographical terms - If she had had the home vote, I think she would have won and personally i think she should have but I've booked my tickets already and can't wait to see the show.
Well done Jodie you seem like a lovely lovely girl

I'm not at all surprised that Jessie showed a good maternal instinct, she is the oldest of 5 children in her family. Like other posters, I wish that the Nancy's had all had opportunity to show their interaction with the Oliver's a lot more. I think that that would have sorted out the right girls for this part. All of the girls were super singers in their own way, but some, like Sam and Keisha for instance seem much better suited to pop songs to me. I think that Jessie was able to show her acting ability and suitability for the part a lot better in her duet with Gwion than in the random bits of acting we saw.
yea I could throttle mine........:D:D:D see we agree.
Mine's fifteen and completly too smart for her own good.

well have patience........like Anthonys....screethhhhh..how did JB put it....howling wolves in from Alaska.......nearly fell of my seat laughting......:D:D:D

From a middle aged mother's point of view, its because Jessie is barely out of childhood, and she's far more natural, more naive and less calculating than Sam. I guessed who would give the best performance before they performed, and was right.
Jessie was really good on Saturday night, but if I had bought tickets for the show, I would have worried about her acting and her movement on the stage, notwithstanding that she did a wonderful job with the movement with Gwion. It struck me that two children were performing, not just one. Nancy is not really raw, or green, she's rough and experienced and jaded....sorry Jodie....lol

Yeh but she's realy only a child deep down. Nancy anyway. She may be experienced, but not to sound too soppy, I think she was grown up, but had the heart of a child.

Sorry but I absolutely hate that song!!! Most of the Chitty songs are awful sacharine rubbish. I felt sorry for J and G having to sing it.:eek::eek::eek::eek:
