Nutjobs like Alex Jones subscribe to the view that they need guns to protect themselves from a totalitarian government which seeks to exterminate them. However given the number of gun-related deaths in America, a smart totalitarian government could simply give guns to the American population and many of them would exterminate each other or themselves with rather shocking enthusiasm
Jones is the textbook example of the arrogance of the typical conspiracy theory nut. They think the government is out to get them, or is watching them, because it makes them feel more important to believe that. If you constantly believe that people want to monitor or destroy you, it's because you falsely hope that you're important enough to matter. Fact is, for 99% of people in America, the government doesn't give a bollocks about you. You could rot for all they care. For the conspiracy theorist, being ignored is a more frightening prospect than being watched.
Alex Jones (conspiracy theorist extrodinaire and general shouty person, and one of the people behind the petition) was just on Piers Morgan Tonight. Very silly and quite funny. Imagine red faced buffoon shouting "THIS WILL BE 1776 ALL OVER AGAIN, YOU WILL NOT TAKE OUR GUNS, THE REPUBLIC WILL RISE". (not exaggerated) Also did an awful British accent to mock Piers, er,, being British.

Just been watching that. It didn't take Alex Jones long to mention Hitler URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_law"]Godwin's Law[/URL. Shouting non-stop may work in some parts of the US, but it looks daft over here.
