I cannot believe that I was taken seriously. That has got to be a first :D

I watched last weeks masterchefs instead of watching ee, it was hardly a big deal. I am not into sports and I do get a little annoyed when they are so prominent but its nit the end of the world.

Would anyone cry if the one show wasn't on? They hardly get massive figures

I certainly wouldn't and I find it hard to imagine it is 'must see tv' for anybody but they seem strangely obsessed with keeping it on no matter what for some bizarre reason.

Probably would have been the easiest thing to cancel for the duration to clear more room in Prime Time gievn that they aren't allowed (rightly so in my opinion) to shift the News too much and people get so upset about the dramas going.

Why did they have to drop EastEnders tonight? BBC has the two main channels :(

I wasn't in to see but I imagine BBC2 was still showing Wimbledon. It generally is until approx 9pm.

The Summer Football tournaments have always clashed with Wimbledon.

BUT I thought BBC2 may have shown Eastenders at 8, seeing as it wasn't a British player playing, but it was a quarter final

I thought they were sometimes on a bit later in July. Euro 96 for example i'd thought was on early to mid July (I went on holiday during some of it) so would have missed Wimbledon but could well be misremembering.

So yes, if every other year, they should have come up with some better way round it by now. Especially given they do have 4 channels and the red button facility.

I don't understand why it's not on BBC iplayer this time. Last time this happened I caught up with EastEnders on BBC iplayer.

This World Cup was slightly early to avoid weather in Brazil at end of july

Well I've just watched 2 hours of a EastEnders. I figured there was never going to be a better time to catch up with last week's episodes that I missed...

But the BBC is a public service broadcaster. It's not beneficial to the broadcaster and the licence fee payer to launch a specialist channel just so that EastEnders can go out as planned.

On average the FIFA World Cup now runs from second week in June to second week in July.

    Italia - 8th June to 8th July, 1990
    USA - 17th June to 17th July, 1994
    France - 10th June to 12th July, 1998
    Korea Japan - 31st May to 30th June, 2002
    Germany - 9th June to 9th July, 2006
    South Africa - 11th June to 11th July, 2010
    Brazil - 12th June to 13th July, 2014

Thing is that still wouldn't work as what do they do when there is a clash like presently. The Tennis fans would be arguing with the football fans as to which should be shown - there would need to be more than one channel. And there would be weeks where there was actually very little to be shown live due to the off seasons.

Plus of course there are specialist sports channels but they are subscription based and it isn't fair to those people that pay the license fee and like Sport (and there are millions of them) to deprive them unless they pay out 30 quid or more a month.

And we've gone to extra time. I've actually had the USA/Belgium game on whilst posting. I think this is the 5th or 6th out of 8 knockout games it has happened in which seems to show it is more likely to happen than not so should be allowed for when scheduling.

Exactly. Even more than being a Soaps lover I believe in PSB so I will defend with my dying breath the BBC's need to show major sporting events whilst it is funded by a License Fee.

I do have to admit that the couple of times they've tried to do 'happy' it has bored me to tears! Plus, no matter how traumatic your enforced captivity with your family has been, seeing their traumas always makes you count your blessings!

I am lucky enough to generally have drama free Christmases so watching utter misery in Albert Square is just traditional now!

That's very interesting - thank you. All those dates def clash with Wimbledon okay so we have this problem at least once every 4 years. Though of course some venues mean more lunchtime or afternoon games rather than 2 or 3 in prime time each day.

Most of the time it is. I subscribe to sports channels so I can watch them. However the World Cup and Wimbledon are massive events. A soap can be aired at a later date. Live matches that masses want to watch can't be just because a soap has to be aired. If every country did that then they wouldn't ever be played.

Also, a lot of people only watch World Cup and Wimbledon. They don't follow it any other time. It's a good time to get people involved with sport.

Nah not enough to fill the time, there is with soaps though shift the lot of them

There actually wouldn't be enough current soaps unless BBC! ITV, Ch4 and Ch5 found a way to combine for one and that would be very unlikely given the advertising issues.

Really let's add it up - 2 hours of EE, 2.5 hours of Corrie, 3 hours of Emmerdale so that is 7.5 hours to fill a week's worth of programming? Even if they got Ch4 and 5 that only increases it by 6. Hours (Hollyoaks, H+A, Neighbours). Let's be generous and count HC, Casualty, WR - another 3 hours (and not 52 weeks a year) - still only 16.5 hours. I actually think we wouldn't be far off that. Amont of Sport on the 5 main channels a week when you consider the Rugby that gets shown, Horse Racing on channel 4 every Saturday afternoon (plus weekdays during events like Ascot), all the Football European friendly and leagues, English League matches, various Athletics events.

Unless they all pulled their resources (which won't ever happen) and showed a lot of repeats, there wouldn't be enough output to justify a Soaps channel anymore than a Sports one.

Again, I do agree and saying this as someone that doesn't much like Sports. There are some events that are too big not to be shown on subscription free channels and people that really love Sport all year round to have to pay a lot to get to see many things.

Quite a lot actually, I went out Sunday to watch the Holland-Costa Rica match and the bar was packed full of Dutch fans.

Actually I've enjoyed it since we've been out, none of that rubbish hype.

I don't know about you but I like watching an event with the rest of the world (which we do belong to believe it or not).

Correction, I watched Netherlands-Mexico, I will watch the Dutch play Costa Rica.

Was a fun night out, felt worse for wear Monday morning though.

I watch them when they air if I am at home as I don't have nor do I intend to get digital telly. I think referring to people as desperate is a bit unkind to be honest.

Seconded. I do have digital tele so can record progs if i'm due to be out but if they get moved then that it is it. I don't have broadband (I post here using my mobile and not only do I not have the speed or capacity for I-Player, the screen is too small for it to be viable) so if iit gets missed when transmitted on tv, it is gone forever. I've missed Fridays EE due to it being delayed by Wimbledon and me not knowing in time to catch either of the repeats later that night.

I understand the reasons, i'm not going to beatch about it but don't appreciate being told that I've wasted my life if I don't want to watch the World Cup.

As it happens, i've seen the World Cup live. I went to one of the England 98 games in France (toulose where we knocked out). I've been to a lot of Premier league games. I was quite into it during my 20s but don't happen to think it is the most important thing in the World and anybody that hates it is lacking in some way. Just as I don't think that those that aren't interested in Soaps, Ballet, Opera, Science fiction are. Different floats for different boats!

Everyone has digital telly, + everyone has internet (iplayer) including yourself...
    Don't see your point...

Everyone has the means to receive digital telly yes but not everyone has Internet and I-Player. I don't, my parents don't, my inlaws don't, my god parents don't, about 6 of my closest 10 friends don't - shall I go on? You are assuming everybody has home computers, laptops or smart tvs and not everybody does. Also not everybody has the means to record digitally. Basic freeview does not have that facility - you can't record a channel other than the one you are watching and you can't timeshift. You need freeview+, Sky+, tivo, catchup services like Virgin on Demand or a secondary recording device to do it and many don't have it. That wasn't offered as standard during the enforced digital switchover when thet gave help to get the elderly and low income switched over and most elderly people I know took the cheapest route which was a bog standard freeview box connected to their old analogue tv.

You're assuming everybody has the same level of technology and they don't.
