This thread is created in reaction to THIS particular post about the faux outrage of the scientists shirt.

It's this last line that made me think....
"As astrophysicist Katie Mack said earlier this week "I don't care what scientists wear. But a shirt featuring women in lingerie isn't appropriate for a broadcast if you care about women in science"

Nor is it appropriate in the workspace. I guess we are finding out why so many on DS are unemployed."

A pretty damning generalisation about the DS Massive. :o

So, I wonder... how many here on DS are actually unemployed, and is it as the poster apparently thinks?

    Poll options

    Employed (inc Self/Voluntary)
    Unemployed
    Retired

(BTW Kelo - this isn't a personal dig at you so please forgive me for using your post. It just made me think how some people generalise). :kitty:

Many seem to "on the sick" judging by the number complaining about the clampdown on benefit scroungers. Depression...... apparently. It takes many forms you know, depending on when it's needed as an excuse to avoid a hard days work.

Please say this is sarcasm against those who do spout crap like that.

As someone who suffers from depression it is hard to face work in some jobs such as retail where you have to have a smile plastered on your face when inside you want to scream and are having thoughts of suicide for example.
Though currently unemployed i am doing work experience so i may be employed soon and though i am enjoying it it took years for me to finally face work. But even so due to personal issues while working yesterday i became very anxious , upset & angry. Though i didn't give in and made it to the end of my shift its a struggle for many people with depression to even face a day let alone work. I have more respect for those with depression for working than anyone with no issues who work.
Internal struggles like that seem far worse to me than noticeable external ones where at least people get some sympathy and kindness.

Most people who spout this rubbish no doubt have secure cushy jobs where they sit in an office all day and walked into it 30 years ago when they left school.

I only just recently started work after been out of it for a good while. It's only a temporary Christmas job but it's work and I'm glad to have it.

Are we all going to have a poll about anything idiotic we may post on here at any time? I thought we wanted to encourage posters, not discourage them!

I would hope that perhaps people would be adults about it and either ignore or challenge directly within that thread, rather than polling the rest of DS about it .. it seems somewhat of an overreaction.

Nobody should feel they need to apologise or feel inadequate for what they do or don't do in their lives all because one person made a remark in post which has now been given some semblance of importance and had a whole thread made about it.

My personal opinion, of course :)

I'm self employed. It really doesn't take that long to post on an internet forum. I don't watch terrestrial television either, so I am always at my desk during the working week.

There is a lot of DS traffic from schools and colleges. It's way above the average.

I'm currently unemployed. Although I only finished a degree a few weeks ago, so I'm awaiting my results. I am volunteering at a museum, however.

    Employed.

People who work for a living probably wouldn't have time to become outraged over something so little.

Trolling or not, it's a fact that a high number of DS contributors don't work, are on the long term sick , in receipt of lots of benefits and the only time their heart rate gets above 60 BPM is when an imminent change in PIP Assesments is approaching.

But we love them all to bits, as DS after midnight would be a duller place if we didn't have cider drinking insomniac agoraphobics with self esteem problems to fritter away the wee small hours with.

Dunno what a "high number" is but I suspect the post wasn't intended seriously. I'd say a high number of DS posters specialise in making unfounded generalisations. ;)

Check the link posted earlier and the proportion of "school" -based browsing locations accessing the site is twice the average though.

I'm currently unemployed, finished Uni in June and worked a couple of temporary jobs since then. I'm going to become self employed before the new year.

You are doing a poll based something Keiō Line said? The poster who claimed to know the Queen and Ronald Reagan? Who has a secret group on here that monitors posters? That runs a cat sanctuary that moves round the country? That employs a lady as a receptionist who is blind and deaf*?

*Many more crazy Keiō posts are available that I have forgotten.

Anyway, full time student, was employed up to this and my degree has full time work placements.

:o:o Is this person still an active member?

Actually, the official UK unemployment rate is 6% at the moment so the results of this poll are fairly representative.

Of course there are big regional variations. In some towns in the SE it is as close to zero as it can statistically get (since there will always be a few people between jobs for a few weeks but they find something new fairly quickly) but other areas that still have big problems with long term unemployment.

As for the shirt - fine on the beach but not appropriate for the workplace, especially when you are on TV in front of a worldwide audience.
