He's been an asshole to his own people for years, to which the West have turned a political blind eye, and now the people have found the balls, and weapons, to stand up to him and try and oust him from power.
This has been brewing for years. Nothing new or sudden about it.
Gaddafi used billions of his rising oil revenues on international projects. He started several wars, had role in others, and spent on acquiring both chemical and nuclear weapons. More discreetly, he directed the country's revenues to sponsor terror and other political activities around the world. The United Nations called Libya under Gaddafi a pariah state
LOL - reminds me of my neighbour, when Saddam Hussein was put on trial she said "what's he ever done to harm anyone, why can't they just leave him alone?"
The US and UK left Gaddafi alone in the past because he was selling oil to them. They're assisting the rebels at the moment because they might get a better deal out of them from this.
Nothing. Just another country for the US to stick their nose in, execute the leader and put
in a puppet regime.
It's a long shot, but 3rd time lucky for the UK (and France), we might, finally, have managed to intervene and deliver the values we allegedly pride ourselves on but are prone to conveniently forget.
Yeah, but apart from that, what's he done wrong all of a sudden?
OP has a point.
People get fed up of years of brutal repression.
they demonstrate earlier in the year, they get shelled and bombed, and so does everyone living in the area.
They naturally get pissed off at this.
Why are we assisting his own people to overthrow him?
Because up to now they haven't made a serious attempt.
Look what's happening to people in Iran and Syria who make a serious attempt to overthrow their governments - they get killed. The same happened in Libya.

Indeed OP has a point. There are a lot of people like Blaur and Brown who should be ashamed of themselves fir sucking up to him and turning a blind eye (no pun intended) to his evil.
Arab Spring got him scared of losing his power, like what happened in Egypt and Tunisia. So like any animal, he just stared to lash out.
Fair comment, but "why now" apples to the question asked of the world and in particular our western governments and the chattering classes. Why now? Why wait 41 years?

Their location and recent history make them a different ball game altogether.

Read the bit about 2011 civil war against Gadaffi. all verified and sourced.
Rhetorical question?
Coming up to 42 years, 42 is a magic number. QED.
When they called for him to be captured alive, so he can be made stand trial for crimes against humanity, then executed.
Yeah, but apart from that, what's he done wrong all of a sudden?

Didn't he start slaughtering his own people in Benghazi?
in a puppet regime.
Back under your bridge.
That rather makes my point. Why now?

No kidding?
