If it's like a pregnancy scan, they just put goo on your tummy & press the camera thingy onto your abdomen. It hadn't occurred to me that it might be internal, but as the GP called it ultrasound I assumed it would be the same as a baby scan. I hope so!

Ahh...you see, my doctor didn't actually say, but when I had a quick consultation with Dr Google, he informed me that pelvic exams to find cysts are often with special vaginal camera. Don't know though. Not too bothered either way...would quite like this sorted out, so if they needed to put a banana up there I'd let them if it were necessary!!

Yeah, me too! I'm pretty sure the GP said ultrasound though, if that's the case it'll be a doddle. They're just doing a general abdo scan to look for any masses which shouldn't be there (sounds the same for both of us), so I doubt they'll restrict it to an ovarian scan, which is perhaps more specialised.

It could be cysts or fibroids, in which case no problem.

Ahh, you too? I'm having the exact same problem at the moment, ended up having to go to the docs twice about it. My monthly has been heavier than it should be for someone on the mirena coil, so my worry is that the damn thing isn't working anymore! Gotta go back to the docs in just over a week for further tests.

As for the hypo thing, I understand exactly what you mean! The problem with me is, I was going to the docs for years (over 20!) complaining about constant pain and extreme tiredness, and it got to the point when I did end up Googling my symptoms. After finding out that CFS didn't exactly cover my symptoms, I found a link to a Fibromyalgia website that was spot on! The next day I went to the docs, didn't even mention the internet, and he immediately diagnosed me with it.

You are not a hypocondiac if there IS something medically wrong with you.

Good luck with the scan and take care of yourself xx

About 10years ago when i was 25 ,i had pains round my lower back ,doc thought it was my kidneys, x ray showed nothing. I then if my memory serves me right had to for is it an ultrasound ,where you have to have a full bladder ? i just went because they didnt know why i was getting these pains,i wasn't on the pill and my periods where ok.
To cut along story short, the scan showed a tiny weeeeeeeeeeeeee cyst on my ovary, doc said it was tiny and couldn't believe i had no pain round that area just my side.I went back if i remember rightly a few weeks later for another scan and it was away.
Im a worrier aswell, so my heart goes out to you, when i got told i had that cyst i was like oh **** lol.

    Thanks Doris!

Everyone I've spoken to say that cysts cause no pain, so I've been shitting myself about that...so it's interesting to hear that your doctor expected your cyst to cause pain even tho it was tiny! That makes me feel better. :)

    I wish I wasn't such a worrier...my brain tells me how silly I am but I can't help it.

I have a slight bit of back pain too. :)

As someone who had a Dermoid cyst growing for ten years I can tell you now that they do.;) Long story short, I went to the docs in 1990 with on/off achy pain near my right ovary. He couldn't feel anything and so that was that. Ten years later I stood up after bending and felt something twist inside. Two days later I was in for surgical removal of two Dermoid cysts on both ovaries.

They were benign (most are) and consist often of hair and teeth because they're like a mutant attempt at growing another you *l*. Anyway, they found them with an up the hoo-ha and lower abdomen scan.

The pain when the little swine twisted was unbelievable:(

Ladies.. I totally understand where you're coming from.. I wonder about every twinge and ache.. but..

Ovaries get cysts regularly.. it just happens, most of the time they resolve themselves, sometimes the cell thats full of fluid gets too blocked and can't get rid of the fluid and it starts to hurt.. its very normal to have a cyst...

I suffered from pain in my lower abdomen over a period of months... sometimes severe, sometimes aching and with back pain involved. Went to the doctor several times - ended up in A&E one saturday afternoon because the locum there thought it was kidney problems - wasn't but I got to give a student nurse their first blood draw and some serious painkillers... sorry, moving on... I was sent for a scan - not internal for the first one.. just 4 gallons of water ( was a while ago ) and a VERY unsympathetic lady, who pointed out a cyst and told me to get over myself - and she was right - only 1 cm. GP referred my to a consultant.. couple hundred quid later ( and an internal scan... ) and he was the one who told me that pretty much every woman gets cysts on their ovaries every couple of months or so.. this was when my 1cm friend had gone... he did a quick check ( while the scanning thing was still where nothing should be without at least an introduction ) on my back and told me it might be an issue with that, but booked me in for keyhold investigative surgery a couple of months ahead of time on a just because you want it basis...

to cut a long story short, I went for a back massage.. told my therapist my woes and she said hang on a minute.. put her finger on a muscle in my lower back and produced the pain that had been scaring me s**tless for the past 6 months, went to the chiropractor and was sorted out..

My point is... long and convoluted.. but also, don't always think the worst because you may well be stressing on something small. I don't mean to belittle any of your worries, and absolutely insist on getting it investigated, but until you get the bad news, don't presume its bad.

You may sleep better. I hope you all end up feeling as silly as I did....

I have never had a scan to check ovaries but the fact that they called it an ultrasound doesn't mean it won't be internal, I had internal ultrasounds in the first 12 weeks of my pregnancy and they also took a look at the ovaries while they were there so I would imagine it would be internal - but I am no medic obviously. :)

Edited: sorry ignore me, just seen that someone that has had the same thing has answered.

Hi, I hope everythign will be ok. It is always a worrying time when you have to wait for an appointment. I think if your GP thought it was something like cancer though s/he would have requested a way quicker referral than you seem to be getting, so take that as a good sign.

And stay away from Google! Great, good luck to you and others waiting for similar investigations.

Oh and an internal scan...I was fuilled with horro when I had to get one during pregnancy, but at least they cover your lower region with a blanket and give you some modesty! And it's not painful as such, just the embarrassment factor and someone fiddling away 'down there' :o .

I hope this isn't what you have, it was awful for me.
You don't seem to be in the agony i was in..

I had a strangulated cyst on my ovary.
apparently, every month a woman develops a cyst? i didn't no that.
but this one swelled up and strangulated around the ovary and fellopean tube (i don't no how)
was in extreme pain and couldn't move without being sick - thats why i think you'll be okay and not have this.
Anyway, i ended up having the whole ovary and tube removed.
I was 16 at the time.

    Hope you're okay :)

I had an ultrasound to check my overies, womb and tubes. I had a very heavy "period" that lasted for 13 weeks and they wanted to find out what was going on. The scan was clear and the cramps that I had been experiencing turned out to be IBS related. Interestingly the fibroid that had shown up when I was pregnant was no longer visable on this scan and had disappeared. I never did find out the cause of bleeding but it happened once more around a year later lasting 9 weeks.
The scan was just the same as a pregnancy ultrasound, even down to the tonnes of water you have to drink beforehand.
I get sharp overian pain for around a day and a half each month when I ovulate and then nothing again till the next month. I would only get it on the right side.

Its easy to fear the worst, I had to go for a mammagram last year as I found 2 large lumps in my breast. They turned out to be related to my menstrual cycle and nothing to worry about, but the moment I felt them I was sure they were something nasty. Hope everything works out ok for you and good luck with the scan. :)

Sorry for bumping this old thread and I am very glad. I'd like to ask for some advice. I have been experiencing similar pains, occasionally this dull aching on my left side of my abdomen the last 3 weeks. I have been slighly worried and I'm going to make myself a doctor appointment. Does this sound like a cyst? Sorry am quite concerned about it and wanted to put my mind up ease a little. Thanks

This will sound weird but i went for a scan years ago because i kept getting pains round my left side, i got that and belly scanned while i was there. Went back to docs for results and was told nothing wrong with my kidneys but i had a tiny, tiny cyst on an ovary and the doc couldn't understand why i hadn't felt any pain in that area.
I had to go back for a scan, i don't know its proper name but i had to have a full bladder and i had to wait for that ..i thought cyst cancer the lot ,what am i waiting for lol. So 3 weeks later i went to the hospital thinking my bladder was full, only to discover it wasn't and i had to sit and rink loads,,they took another scan and nothing was there.
I was never asked to go back, which i thought at the time was strange.
Hope this helps..don't worry am also a fellow worrier and hypo lol.

I had similar pain on the right side, it turned out to be an ovarian cyst. had it removed it was fine.

I had no pain and no idea I had a cyst until my baby didnt engage and I was sent for a c-section. Out popped baby and up bobbed a 22cm cyst that had distorted my right ovary and blocked his path, so to speak. Both were removed there and then, and thankfully no signs of any probs on my left ovary. Initial tests showed no signs of cancer but they also ruled out the cyst had grown rapidly due to rush of hormones in pregnancy. Scans throughout pregnancy had failed to detect any such complication and as a result the consultant wants me back for scans/blood tests on a frequent basis to monitor the left side. It almost seems quite surreal to me that something so large and potentially damaging was in there with no pain or discomfort to show for it (or, prior to pregnancy, changes in cycle etc). Definitely worth taking your GPs up on any offers of tests or scans.

I just wanted to say, thank you for your replies - much appreciated. I have been busy with RL.

I had a vaginal swab taken last Thursday - still wating to hear from the results.

But my GP referred me to the hospital for an Internal scan.(Transvagina - spelling?). Which I was dreading the most. I'm a bit scared to have the Internal tbh, a camera up there. Is it uncomfortable? I've heard it is painless. I don't think I can go through it.

keep getting a dull kind of pain ache on/off. It's quite low down, below my hip almost on the pelvic bone. (on the left)

BTW - Cysts run on my mum's side. I had a cyst in my eye and had it surgically removed, when I was 14. My sister had a ovarian cyst removed and was in real pain. My mum/aunts has got cysts on their head.

    Hello,

just wondering if anyone has had any experiences with ovarian pain?

I have had a dull ache in the region of my left ovary for about a month and a half. I went to the doctor today and he is sending me for a scan.

I am a dreadful worrier and have obviously now assumed I have ovarian cancer. I was wondering if anybody had similar symptoms to me and what they turned out to be?

    - Dull, slight ache in left ovary
    - No change in bowels/periods
    - No noticeable bloating
    - Doctor said he couldn't feel any sort of mass there
    - No odd bleeding
    - Slight lower back pain on that side
    - Slightly longer cycle (32 days rather than my normal 29)
    - Been having fuzzy headaches almost constantly for a couple of weeks, but this could be the overspill of labyrinthitis that I've had on and off since September 08

I'm 25, have no children, am not on pill (but used to be, from age 17 - 21), am 5 foot 7 and size 14/16.

I'm hoping to God it's a cyst or something....

I haven't read any of the other replies (just off to work!!) but I have just been for a scan - I didn't have all your symptoms but some of them. The ultra sound scan lady told me that I have a cyst on one ovary and possibly another on the other ovary but as we weren't sure where I am in my cycle she said that could well be a follicle waiting to burst! I have to go and see my doctor at the end of the week so we can decide what to do - ie wait and see if it goes and if not have it removed (this is what the scan lady told me). I was quite impressed as she told me there and then what she had seen.
I had gone down the route of the worst thing possible so I know how you feel. If it is a cyst this is a good website
    http://www.medic8.com/healthguide/articles/ovariancysts.html

Try not to worry - at least you have gone early to find out what it is.
    Good Luck xx

Oh yes, belomb - forgot to say PM me too if you like we can ALL be scan buddies!!!

Isn't it amazing how 'common' they are - and I know what you mean about being hypo - even though they told me what it was I am still thinking 'what if she got it wrong'!!!!!!! How paranoid am I too!!

All of the above symptoms are possible with Ovarian Cysts. My wife has just had hers removed with keyhold surgery (2 x entometrial cysts at 4cm across each) and she had very similar symptoms (and non-symptoms) as you.

At age 25, it is extremely unlikely you've got ovarian cancer - a woman of your age with an ultrasound diagnosed ovarian cyst in one ovary has a 1 in 30,000 chance of that cyst being malignant when removed and tested. In other words, it is better than 99.9% certain that you do not have cancer.

Have the tests, but relax :D

I had the scan (I used to be pvc_sister) and it came out fine, nothing was found) but the bloody pain is back again.

I have no idea what to do now, suppose I should go back to the docs. I do have IBS, but *touch wood* I've not had a problem with it for a good long while.

I think I might have to ask for the dreaded smear test

Oh, and the scan is not uncomfortable or painful, just a little disconcerting :D

I've had similar pain for a decade and nothing helps. I had an ultrasopund recently which showed no abnormalities and a laparoscopy (keyhole investigative surgery under general anaesthesia in 2002) which showed nothing. I still have no diagnosis and can't take the Pill so I have been given a Mirena IUS which I hope helps as much as the last one did.

This describes an ultrasound but it can also be done transvaginally with a lubed-up probe being inserted in the vagine and moved about near the cervix. I had this last month and the proble looks a bit scary but is not at all uncomfortable and is out very quickly. Just wanted to point out that this is a possibility if the sonographer can't get a good view by passing the probe over the abdomen, which is what happened to me.
