There was a great programme about "Tintin in the Soviet Union" on BBC4. In it, it was explained that Cap'n Haddock's French expressions didn't translate, so the UK translator lady had to make up expressions that captured the spirit.

I assume there's no chance of Sapper (Bulldog Drummond) or John Buchan (39 Steps) on the shelves then. And definitely no Sax Rohmer (Fu Manchu) or Edgar Wallace (Sanders of the River). The way in which these books portray germans and socialists, germans again, orientals and africans is simply appalling.

Pui it this way, from the version I've seen on Youtube (Teeside TinTin), I'll never read another Tin Tin book the same way again.

Yes, Michael Turner and Leslie Lonsdale-Cooper were responsible for the Captain's sayings that I listed.

Not sure if it was mentioned in the prog (I missed it ) that Snowy, in French and in the original, is known as Milou.

Edit - ten thousand thundering typhoons - I'd completely forgotten about this thread - it's over 4 years old!!!

The lawyer in question was on LBC this morning, he actually made some quite good points.

By the sounds of it the book is pretty extreme in that black people are poytrayed by word and pictures as being very stupid with big angry baboon faces. They are shown as being so stupid that they accept tin tins dog as their god and leader.

He didn't want the book banned he wanted it moved out of the kiddies section where it was being quite heavily marketed as he felt it was innapropriate for young children to see this very negative portrayal of black people.

The book chain (forgotten what they are called) looked into and agreed and moved the book into the adult graphic section.

I actually agree with this one and I'm normally not one to follow censorship and pandering to left wing sensibilities. In this case i don't think they are.

The book was written in the early 30's when viewpoints were very different. I don't think a book like this is good for children to read as a plain story. However it is an excellent book to document how opinions have changed over the years

They do look like monkeys and from what I've heard Snowy the dog is made in to the king of all the dark people in the story. The undertone (from what I heard on LBC) seems to be that even a dog is superior to the black people (or "monkeys") in the story.

If it's "political correctness" to not like racism then so be it. Better than being stuck in the 1950s like some of you lot seem to be. Taking the piss out of people for being black just isn't acceptable these days - get over it and stop throwing the PC card around. Even Nick Ferrari thought the book was wrong.

Interesting seeing this old thread come up and reading what I had written.

So there I am driving into work this morning listening to Nick Ferrari - and guess what!? He's all outraged about it now, saying it's just a story and so on and shouldn't be top-shelved..

If nothing else, it just reiterates what a pointless, shock jock buffoon he really is! :D

It's not banned it's been moved to the adult graphic novel section apparently.

It is racist, it's the same with the Enid Blyton books. However it should be left as it is, Endi Blyton's books were edited to make her look like less of a c*nt.

Oh those were halcyon, innocent days. When a black man wasn't allowed on a golf course and women were second class citizens. I'm sure a Famous Five "Golliwog" Edition sells for a mint now, though. Ahh the memories.

After all, that was the reality then. They were the prevailing attitudes and they were wrong. Tintin is shit anyway, frankly. Non-issue.

On one hand I can see it shouldn't be sold to children who would take in what it says with an unquestioning attitude but it's the parents who are bringing them up that are more important to their development.

    :rolleyes::rolleyes:
