    What's the rule on this? Was the referee correct to count it?

    Yes, he was. The ball wasnt dead. Simply stopping it dosent mean the play is 'dead'.

    Somebody on the comments section below the article claims that if the ball stops going forward or rebounds then it is dead.

    That's a rule I had never heard of and was wondering whether it's true or not. Sounds unlikely, I think.

    I couldn't see the video but ... I always thought that if a penalty [in a shoot out, not during normal gametime] was blocked it was considered dead. There are plenty of instances where goalkeepers save shots in shoot outs and then kick the ball into their own nets in celebration.
