The Daily Mail is the Best Newspaper for Sport

I suspect many people don't realise that Britain's most influential newspaper is also very good for sport. Martin Samuel (The Mail's Voice of Sport) has predictably been awarded Sports Writer of the Year for the fifth time.

For more details of the Mail's success:

That comment just proves his point.

But I suspect your original post was made just to stir up an argument anyway.

Samuel is OK most of the time when he sticks to football, although even there his cultural prejudices sometimes come to the surface e.g. Anelka and the 'Quenelle'.

When he seeks to 'comment' on other sports he often makes a right fool of himself, I'd rather stick to the specialist reporters who have the inside knowledge of the issues. I suspect that those specialist reporters must cringe at some of the ill informed nonsense he comes out with and know it will strain their relationships with the sport and make their job more difficult.

By "cultural prejudices" I take it you mean he opposes anti-Semitic rabble rousers? For many of us that know something of the holocaust that is a good thing.

He did write brilliantly on that issue and other "racial matters". He has been particularly good. When most of the other poor saps either kept well clear for their own safety or just didn't have much of a clue.

I fully expected Martin to win it again. He is of course the Top Man.

Shouldn't this thread be in the General Discussion forum?

Journalism threads aren't usually (if at all) covered in the Sports forum

Yes, it should be in there, under the "books ... " subforum.

He also writes for the Jewish Chronicle, enough said.

I would have liked that. But after thinking long and hard about it I decided it would be better in the all things sport forum - where the people who follow sport sometimes go.

It appears that this is a journalism thread

A thread about BT Sport goes in the Broadcast forum, logically to me I would expect a thread about Daily Mail to go in the General Discussion forum

It's more about where to find the best news coverage of sports news and opinion for sports fans - with ensuing debate on the issue.

There is a TV football pundits thread in the football forum - where the football fans visit. Rather than in the TV or Broadcasting forums.

How does my comment prove the point that the Mail is fascist?

I'd be most interested in your thinking behind this odd claim.

Patrick Collins is utter shyte. He's even worse than Stephen Jones and that's saying something.

    Paul Rees is the best.

Patrick Collins of The Mail on Sunday has been winning sports writer of the years awards for donkey's years.

But I've never even heard of the other two you mentioned. :D

Stephen Jones is a pretentious asswipe. But I expect nothing less from someone associated with Rugby Union.

It's not enough. Care to elucidate further?

Perhaps I should remind you Anelka was fined £80, 000 and banned for five matches.

Martin Samuel once came and stood with us on the terraces shortly after the Hillsborough incident. I was there whilst he took comments off a number of people around us, and then a few days later sat down goggle eyed to read a two page article in the Sun full of exaggerated and fabricated shite. It had pretty much no correlation with what he'd been told.

I've always been amazed since then at his progress as he's a third rate journalist at best. So the Mail's probably a good home for him.

Private Eye would struggle to fill their pages without the existence of the Mail. Enough said for the quality found within "Britain's most influential newspaper", sports pages or otherwise.

And Samuel, the Spurs supporter, wanted him to serve a 16 game ban:o

It was also Samuel who coined the appalling phrase 'plastic Brits' when referring to British athletes born abroad, while conveniently failing to mention the DM's role in the Zola Budd affair.

Yes, he was spot on on both issues.

He is particularly good on the racial stuff - blacks complaining about being held back, and such.

And that West Ham bias clouds his judgement at times, particularly with his repeated attacks on Sheffield United at the time, after his beloved club got into trouble over Carlos Tevez.

He's usually good value when talking about teams other than Allardyce's Academy though, particularly on Sky.

Anyone that thinks Martin Samuel is a good sports journalist seriously lacks good judgement and taste.

Hes an awful agenda driven hypocrite, he writes absolute rubbish which he usually conradicts at a later date.

If you want to see how sports journalism should be done have a read of Barney Ronay in the Guardian.

Martin has won the award FIVE times. He will be the highest paid sports columnist in the country - because he is the best.

I expected him to win it this year - and he did. :D

Like the vast majority of fans I've never even heard of Barney Whatshisname.

I always thought that The Guardian was the best paper for sport - at least based on the quality of its online offering.
