Playstation updates also take up room, I believe.

Mine is the same. I have a 120GB PS3 and have around 35GB left, even though I delete my game data after I finish playing them. Guess it's just the PS3 updates.

Erm, the only stuff you can store online are game saves and they are back-ups of what is on the HDD (unless you have PlayMemories which would allow you to store some photos/videos online).

Patches/updates can be stored in 2 places depending on game.

Install data for retail (and some digital games) are stored in the Game Data folder.

Patches for retail games are stored in the Game Data folder.

Patches for some digital games will be stored in the game file itself and won't appear in Game Data folder.

All DLC and unlock keys are stored in the Game Data folder.

The OS also reserves some space for itself.
