Hello everyone
I have just bought a Pioneer 420 after following advice posted in the forum. However as a newcomer to DVRs, I am having some problems in setting up to incorporate my existing equipment (Telewest Cable Pace STB, Sanyo 775 E VCR, Sony TV.
I am able to record to DVR (cable and terrestrial) and playback recorded VCR material. I cannot record material from VCR to DVD or to VCR from Cable or terrestrial. So far my setup is:
Sony TV (Scarts 1 (RGB) -> Pio DVR (Scart AV1 TV) (Scart 2 unused)
Pio DVR (Scart AV2 Input) -> Cable STB (Scart TV)
Cable STB (Scart VCR) -> Sanyo VCR (Scart)
I have used 2 RF setups
TV -> Pio DVR (antennae)
Pio DVR (In) -> STB (TV)
STB (Antennae) -> VCR (Out)
VCR (Aerial In)
or
TV -> Pio DVR (antennae)
Pio DVR (In) -> VCR (Out)
STB (Antennae) -> Aerial.
I have tuned all channels to DVR (1-4, 5 signal not good) and cable to channel 6. I have tuned the VCR to channel 7 on DVR but it does not show a picture.
I have set DVR Video Out AV1 setting to RGB and Video In (AV2/L1) setting to RGB (have tried Video setting also).
I would be grateful for any help.
thanks

I'm still struggling with integrating my VCR to record in my setup. I'm interested in making the odd recording for family etc without taking the connections apart. I got help to do this once before from the forum with aLiteon 5045 DVDR HDD that I had for a short time. However, the setup used then doesn't work now (unless I've remembered it wrong). It would be useful if I could do this whilst recording from the Pio.
As far as I can see the problem may be
1) Incorrect tuning
2)Pio DVDR HDD does allow pass through
Please note my Sanyo VCR only has one scart (but RF IN , RF OUT). Everything else has 2 scarts and RF IN, RF OUT.
I would appreciate any advice.
Thanks

Which switch box do you use and what scart cables. I have previously bought a (cheap £5 - £6) Phillips switch box from Asda without success. I'm not sure if the box isn't good enough (rgb etc - no labelling help) or if a problem with scart leads. I have switched them around - mainly using unused spares provided by Telewest.

I have been using Nikkai SCART leads, also from Maplins, although I can't find them on the Maplins web site. The connectors on them are two-tone grey and the cables are about £20 a pop (depending on length).
The RF set up should be as follows (assumes no RF recording on the VCR)
External Aerial ----> DVDR RF in
DVDR RF out ----> TV RF in
Provided the DVDR passes an external signal through, you can now watch the STB through the DVDR on TV AV1 while recording RF (ch 1,2,3,4,5) through your aerial.
To record from STB just select AV2 on the DVDR
To record from VCR select AV2 on DVDR and leave STB in standby (do these recordings while youre not doing other viewing or at night.
Try this and come back if youre having difficulty.

I've been looking again at my setup.
What I am missing is the ability to record RF onto VCR (not too worried about quality now I have DVDR) posssibly whilst watching something else or recording using DVDR. I can record on VCR what is showing on the Telewest STB via selecting L1 input on VCR. If I select the terrestrial channels, I get nothing. Am I missing something - possibily tuning DVDR and VCR correctly ?
Thinking it through (very difficult for me !!), if the switcher was connected to TV AV2 and VCR, what could I record?

However, to add that extra bit of flexibility/funtionality try this for your RF set up:
External Aerial ----> DVDR RF in
DVDR RF out ----> VCR RF in
VCR RF out ---> TV RF in
You will need to ensure your VCR is tured for terrestrial - I would connect up as above the instigate Autotune on the VCR.

The VCR is already tuned for TV and STB. Do I need to tune VCR and DVDR?
I have tried to do this before but I'm not sure if I've done it right. Any advice would be welcome as manual does not cover this at all.
Would the scart switcher help in any way?
Thanks

for recording to the DVDR - To record from STB just select AV2 on the DVDR
To record from VCR select AV2 on DVDR and leave STB in standby (do these recordings while youre not doing other viewing or at night). There is no need to 'tune' the DVDR to the VCR just let it pass scart through the STB.
For terrestrial DVDR recording just tune to channel 1,2,3,4,5 as if it were the VCR!
Easy!

I will try this - my VCR has L1 input selection - I am assuming this is the same as AV1?
Likewise, the DVDR has L1 and L2 input selections - same as AV1 & 2?

Good luck,
