im no sorkin expert but CJ from west wing was hella strong! Sloane too

and mckenzie can be too, alot of people in life are flawed, doesnt mean its bad writing to expose these, mckenzie is perfect example of this, so so smart, great at her job but falls apart and makes mistakes when it comes to love

i dont see the hatred from strong female characters thats all

I don't see it either. CJ Cregg was one of the best and strongest female characters in TV history. TWW also had plenty of other strong women.

I wasn't as keen on episode 2 as it was a little too soapy and a too light on Jeff Daniels although I like the rival female journalist - (Grace Gummer, sister of Mamie and daughter of Meryl Streep).

Sorkin wrote some superb female characters in TWW. Though this has been brought up frequently with The Newsroom.

I've never thought of the Newsroom as misogynistic. All of the characters are crazy and neurotic.

When Sorkin get’s it right and the right actor is bringing those words to life it is a work of art and The Newsroom gets more right than it does wrong.

Who's watching series 2? I think there's been a definite improvement in the quality of the show after the first 3 episodes, saying that as a big fan of the first series.

Here's a quick preview of episode 4 in case anybody missed it -

I thought ep4 was an improvement on the previous two which had got a little too soapy for my liking.

The scenes with the Romney campaign really do remind me of The West Wing's 20 Hours in America, especially as John Gallagher (Jim) was in those episodes too.

Just watched this episode & I still have tears in my eyes. Wow such powerful scrips, grown up tv showing how life can be difficult on so many levels.

The Newsroom, is one of the few programs I have activity encouraged friends & family to watch as it is consistently superb with its focus is on what really matters to ordinary Folks.

Most of those reasons are pretty weak, especially the point about Mackenzie asking Sloane to be her friend. Its not like fighting your way upto the top of your field leaves anyone much time for socialising anyway but Mackenzie was away producing news reports in war zones, war zone reporting itself being a male dominated field (as is fighting wars) so I don't see how its unusual or Misogynistic for the character to not have any female friends to hand.

And as about 3 of those points were attacks on celeb culture and the obsession we as a society have of it rather than an attack on women so using that as proof of it being misogynistic is a bit far.

As others have said Sorkins shows are full of strong women. Yes sometimes these strong women have moments of weakness that you could if you have an agenda say are traits of him being a misogynistic but the strong men in his shows also have these moments. After all as humans we all have these moments no matter how strong willed and intelligent you may be

This is a great series - every episode is engrossing, and you can't let your concentration slip for a second otherwise you'll miss a whole section of dialogue and be completely lost!

Will McAvoy is clearly a bit of a jerk, but him going to the OWS lady's college to apologise was a nice touch.

As a Sorkin fan and Wing Nut I've always thought he wrote some female characters as a bit dippy and hopeless (if not necessarily weak), be it Donna in TWW or Harriet in SS60. Newsroom has three in Maggie, Mac and Sloane. As for CJ Cregg she really came into her own after Sorkin left TWW.

Anyway as for season 2 so far, I'm liking it if not entirely loving it. It's darker and the cast aren't just playing second fiddle to Will McAvoy, which I guess is a good thing.

Back to strong women, I hope we see more of Marcia Gay Harden because she's superb.

Thought the whole point of Sky Atlantic was to show straight after HBO? Feel a bit less guilty at watching US Pace in that case.

Last episode was really great, some bits were really predictable, but others not (
    Maggie and the blonde hair
    )

So are we now past those meetings? I'm also guessing that the Wall St protest won't be mentioned again either.

Yes that was quite confusing with the time-line and the Length/colour of her hair, took me a while to get up to speed.

A jam packed episode where if you blink you miss something, each episode is like watching what other TV shows would take 5-10 episode to cover.

The final scean and the silence as the credits rolled :eek::eek:

Checking the dates, the OWS protests were in October 2011 but in this episode we have jumped forward to March 2012. That's 5 months lost in which time her hair has grown back. That also means they have been sitting on the Genoa story for that long. Yet the scenes with the lawyers in the conference room are set *after* they broadcast the story - and that when Maggie still has short hair. It's confusing. Maybe she had a relapse?

Aren't we still in flashback prior to the meeting. She had short, red hair in the meeting so I think the hair cutting hasn't happened yet?

    I thought this too.
We've been told she's drinking, staying out late, depressed with her living situation and the Africa thing. The first crack in her work performance has just shown with the incorrect cutting of the police recording too.

The spook who came to see Charlie warned them off Genoa too, so it's got to be what's gone before the story ran.

Have to say I'm desperate for Don and Sloane to just get it on. Love saga number three is well underway and can we have at least one of them sorted by the end of season two :D (We know Mac and Will won't be resolved until the end of the last season, which is hopefully a long way away!!)
