So will Keeley Hawes play the Rani?

Just a thought I had after watching the Life on Mars spin off tonight. Unfortunately her characters name is Alex Drake, so we can't have a "masterly" anagram like that of John Simms character Sam Tyler ;)

    I certainly wasn't impressed by her as Alex Drake but she had the over the top dramatics enough to play the Rani and get away with it!

    She was a pointless excuse of a character from the most woefully bad era of DW ever. No one could do that character justice.

    However, an anagram of "Alex Drake" = "A Dalek Rex" or, put another way, king of the Daleks.

    Could she be being lined up to play a transexual Davros?

    Good News Kate O'Mara said in a interview once she would come back as the Rani and said she'd give David Tennant a run for his money, unless she was joking or not I'm not sure, i've never seen the Rani as I didn't watch the old series will have to have a look around

    Given how bad Ashes To Ashes is, and how the ratings are plunging she'll have the free time to play her anyway...

    Ms Hawes is a pretty busy actress regardless. I don't think one underwhelming series is going to leave the woman twiddling her thumbs all day.

    It'd just be Tanya Turner with a TARDIS, another character being rehashed rather than a test of the actress' talents. I'm not too keen on the Rani as a character, but as long as they kept a reappearance to a minimal, without having her as a big bad or anything, I wouldn't have too much of a problem with her return.

    Keeley Hawes is an interesting choice to play the role, she's a different bread of actress to the likes of Kate O'Mara or Zoe Lucker. With O'Mara and Lucker both appearing in Bad Girls at some point; it got me thinking of Eva Pope; she might be good as the Rani actually. Granted, she's not as high profile as others have mentioned; but she might be capable of balancing out the bitchy side of the Rani with something else.

    I think Kate O'Mara should initially play the role, perhaps wiped of her memories in the same way the Master was when we first met up with him again.

    I would love to see Keeley take on the role. She is so beautiful - Ashes to Ashes really doesn't do her justice.

    It's funny that I find Keeley Hawes is quite cold and austere in "Ashes to Ashes", yet she's almost unrecognisable in Britflick "The Bank Job" with a warm wifey/mothery persona and common accent.

    Still, dream cast: Zoe Lucker as the Rani and Barry from Eastenders as the Meddling Monk.
