I always thought the very first couple of series or so were crap. It got better towards the late 80s.

Yay! I'm tuning in. If only to see what they've got on the prize board.

I saw a trailer last night and the prizes look shocking! You will notice tonight that they're the atv episodes, before central won the itv franchise in 1982

That IS what makes it so legendary :D
My neighbour, the bf and I sit creased laughing at the prizes, the fashions and the haircuts.
Also, you can tell it's before the days when people were 'auditioned' to appear on game shows.
Some of Jimbo's gaffes crack us up, too.

Even back then we used to laugh at the prizes, they were rubbish, I would have gambled everytime..... Transistor radio's, electric tin openers you could screw on the wall, plastic kitchen scales etc...

I've seen some online. Very different look to the later series.

It seemed to be a requirement of the show that every male contestant HAD to have a moustache lol !

You can't beat a bit of bully.
Unless Dave Spikey is presenting it.

Jim has said himself the first few episodes where deleted as they was that bad and he never thought it would make a 2nd series.

It's not that it bombed, just that Challenge's own commissions never seem to make a second series.

I thought the Challenge series was ok. It didn't take itself seriously.
They obviously wanted Peter Kay because of his standup routine but had to settle for Spikey. Again, I thought he was ok for what the show was.

Unfortunately if they brought it back again I think it would be on ITV and if not Ant & Dec it would be Vernon Kaye or Paddy McGuinness :(

Lol Carlton couldn't resist sticking their ident on the end, thought they did leave the atv ident and endcap on as well.

    Well, that was a work-in-progress, wasn't it?

No Tony Green, no Bully, no "You can't beat a bit of Bully".

An overcomplicated first round and missing the obvious of making the winning score in round two the value of the question.

    :D

I love how clunky this is!

It's like it was shot in someone's living room!

I know it was always naff but its funny to see it in this embryonic form.

Jim calling out the scores too. Weird.
